Best MMORPGs on PS4 That You Can Play Right Now
The Elder Scrolls Online
Originally released exclusively for PC, The Elder Scrolls Online eventually came to PS4, at which time it shifted to a buy-to-play model.
If you’re eagerly awaiting the release of The Elder Scrolls VI and have yet to try out The Elder Scrolls Online, you may want to give it a shot. It’s a fully-fledged entry into the Elder Scrolls series, only now you can experience it alongside a friend or two.
The Elder Scrolls Online stands out from the rest, being an MMORPG that can be played entirely in first-person and is built with the perspective in mind.
Players who have lost hours of their life to previous Elder Scrolls entries will feel right at home with The Elder Scrolls Online. There’s certainly enough quests to complete and skills to level up to sap away hundreds of hours or more. Or you can just jump in to experience the story and jump out again.
TERA
TERA is a free-to-play MMORPG with practically no restrictions to content or level. Players can purchase an “Elite” membership to level up faster and receive more loot if they so wish, but players who don’t can still bask in this MMORPG to their heart’s content.
TERA is an MMORPG that will resonate most with fans of action RPGs, thanks to its real-time action combat system. Players aren’t required to manually select individual targets; they can just jump in and start wailing on their enemies.
The game was built with controllers in mind, so PS4 players won’t be at a disadvantage.
Neverwinter
Dungeons & Dragons is a fantastic game, but your imagination can have its limits. Sometimes, you just want to see the flamboyancy of your character and the ferocity of your foes right before your eyes. That’s where Neverwinter comes in.
Neverwinter is an MMORPG set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe. The game allows you to role any type of character that you can in the tabletop RPG.
In Neverwinter, you can take on some of the already established campaigns, such as the recently-released Ravenloft. Budding DMs can even create their own locations and campaigns, just like the real Dungeons & Dragons.

DC Universe Online
DC Universe Online is a free-to-play MMORPG that has been around since 2011. Starting on the PS3, it eventually made the jump to PS4 in 2013.
Players don’t actually control an established DC Comics character. Instead they take on the role of a new, original character and have to choose between joining the Hero or Villain factions. Throughout the game, players interact with a plethora of iconic DC heroes and villains.
If you’ve always wanted to become a member of the Justice League or The Society, then DC Universe Online is the MMORPG for you.
Final Fantasy XIV
Final Fantasy XIV is a game that we would recommend to both MMORPG fans and JRPG fans alike.
It retains the series’ high standard of storytelling and world design. The characters are memorable, and the stakes of the narrative continue to grow with each expansion that is released.
There is a high level of variety in the standard dungeons, and the end-game raids are exciting, challenging, and a treat for the eyes and ears.
It is one of the few PS4 MMORPGs that uses the subscription & pay to play model, but the quality and quantity of content updates helps justify the subscription fee.
Planetside 2
Planetside 2 is a free-to-play MMORPG/first-person shooter hybrid. It currently holds the Guinness World Record for the biggest first-person shooter battle in a video game: over 1158 players.
Planetside 2 doesn’t incorporate a typical quest system. Instead players have to work to capture enemy territories. Members of hostile factions have to be taken down in order to gain control of more facilities and bolster your own faction.
The game’s class system includes different military classes, such as Infiltrator, Heavy Assault, and Combat Medic. Like in most MMORPGs, your class determines your stats, skills, and what types of equipment you can take into battle.

Star Trek Online
Star Trek Online is a game that is clearly aimed at a particular fanbase. However, it fills a gap in the MMORPG genre that isn’t covered all too well: sci-fi. Even if you haven’t seen a single Star Trek episode or movie, sci-fi fans might want to give this game a look.
It is developed by Cryptic Studios, the same team behind Neverwinter, and has been available as a free-to-play MMORPG on PS4 since 2016.
Every player in Star Trek Online is the captain of their own starship. The starship can be controlled and managed, but players are also required to beam down and undertake missions on a planet’s surface.
The flow of combat is controlled by both what’s happening on your ship and the player’s situation on the ground, requiring a high level of tactics in order to perform admirably.
Skyforge
Skyforge is yet another free-to-play MMORPG that made the jump from PC to PS4 a little later in its life.
Usually in MMORPGs, you start off as a common, lowly adventurer, but not in Skyforge. Instead you play as an immortal, protecting your world from the might of hostile gods until you eventually become a god yourself.
It has an action combat system similar to TERA, where your movement, positioning, and good area of effect usage are vital to your performance. The visuals reflect the otherworldly nature of Skyforge, with great flashy and stylish animation for spells.
It’s also similar to Final Fantasy XIV in that your character can change classes, allowing you to level whatever you want freely.
Trove
Trove is a sandbox MMORPG that you can download on PS4 for absolutely free.
Although certainly not the same, Trove is is comparable to Minecraft in terms of its art stlye and its open world.
Leveling up opens up portals which will take you to harder worlds, allowing you to obtain even better loot.
Unique to Trove is the “Collection” system. Certain pieces of gear will be added to your collection and can then be accessed and equipped by any character on that player’s account.
While the entirety of Trove is accessible by free members, there is an option to pay to skip some of the grind.
