Arcade Spirits is a Visual Novel That Ignores the Gaming Crash of the ’80s

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Imagine a world where the 1983 video game crash never happened. The visual novel Arcade Spirits takes place in an alternate history where none of that craziness ever happened. You take on your own character that you can design from the ground up, including your skin color, hairstyle, hair color, eye color, and more, and head out to become employed at the Funplex arcade. While working there, you meet a host of new people and romantic interests, while you watch love blossom in an arcade setting.

There are seven total romanceable characters with relationships that grow based on the choices you make throughout the game. The Identity Identifier System, or IRIS, will help you track how each relationship is playing out throughout the game, and you can keep track of your personality traits that same way as well. Everything you choose and customize will end up having an effect on your arcade, so choose wisely!

Interested in seeing how things play out? There’s a demo via Steam right now, and the game is scheduled for release in early 2019 on PC, Mac, and Linux. Give it a try and see where things lead! Romance can be found in the strangest of places sometimes…and we really don’t have enough visual novels based on video game culture, arcades, or anything else like that after all.
