One of Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition’s most touted features was its mod support. Who wasn’t looking forward to dressing up Noctis in a purple Cactuar costume or wielding Gordon Freeman’s iconic crowbar? While the process of downloading mods tends to be idiot-proof (especially if they’re downloaded through Steam Workshop), developing mods isn’t the most intuitive of tasks. But fear not, fellow Final Fantasy fanatics, because the latest patch makes the process of converting assets into mods a far more simpler affair.
Patch 1.24 is finally available for Final Fantasy XV. The update includes several minor bug fixes, but its highlight feature is the mod option menu, otherwise known as the Mod Organizer, exclusive to the Windows Edition. If you have an asset you would like to share with the rest of the Final Fantasy XV Steam community, the Mod Organizer is here to help. The organizer aids in the development of mods that change the appearance of Noctis, his crew, or any in-game NPC. These mods can alter the characters themselves or the clothes they wear. More importantly, the organizer also simplifies the process of developing weapon mods. Thanks to the Mod Organizer, you can create either a custom cosmetic skin for a weapon or a unique weapon with its own stats. However, weapon mods created with the organizer use the game’s point distribution system, so don’t expect to craft a lightsaber that can one-shot the Adamantoise.
Now, the Mod Organizer isn’t a universal tool. You can’t use it to create assets or download mods. The organizer only automates the tasks of converting assets into mod data and uploading that data to the Final Fantasy XV Steam Workshop. If you want to create a custom model for a weapon, character, or outfit, you’re going to need a separate program.
Now that Square Enix and Valve have simplified the process of converting assets into mod data, we can likely expect the Final Fantasy XV Steam Workshop to see an influx of new mods. Perhaps we can look forward to one of your creations in the workshop.
