Information about Kingdom Hearts III has really started pouring out since the D23 Expo in Japan. From a new trailer, to new details about the Gummi Ship system and even Utada Hikaru returning for the theme song, Kingdom Hearts III is shaping up to be a game that fans have been waiting on for over a decade.
During the D23 event, Kingdom Hearts director Tetsuya Nomura gave us some insight into the new worlds worlds in the game, but many of his comments were overshadowed by the initial hype of seeing Sora, Donald, and Goofy in action again. Now that his comments are starting to get some attention, though, it gives us an idea of how large Kingdom Hearts III really is.
With over twenty playable worlds across the series and a convoluted storyline holding them all together, Kingdom Hearts has never shied away from large-scale locations and concepts. The third major installment looks to be taking it one step further.
With ten worlds so far, Nomura confirmed that Kingdom Hearts III is divided into three major areas: the beginning locations, mid-level locations, and the final locations. Monsters Inc. and Toy Story worlds can be found near the beginning of the game and are 90% complete; while worlds like Tangled can be found in the middle and are near 70% completion.
Co-director Tai Yasue explained how this game is different from the others because “One world is equivalent to one [previous] game, and the things to do for each world are vastly different. My favorite world has not yet been announced so please look forward to it too.” You can read more of Mr. Yasue’s comments here.
Some of the confirmed worlds for Kingdom Hearts III (aside from the ones mentioned above) are: Twilight Town, Mount Olympus (Hercules), and San Fransokyo (Big Hero 6). Hopefully we see more of the game at E3 this year.
Kingdom Hearts III is scheduled to release sometime in 2018 on PS4 and Xbox One.
