Titanfall 2’s Next Beta is This Weekend, and Respawn Learned a Lot from the First One

Aw yeah.

This past weekend marked the first of two online betas for Respawn’s Titanfall 2. If you thought there would be a long wait for the next one, it turns out that the second beta will run this weekend. Hope you didn’t delete your copy of the technical test!

The first beta has taught the studio a lot, which they explain in a blog post. “At least a dozen” problems cropped up during the first one, several that players didn’t notice. The issues that players did notice have been fixed by now (this beta is running off a version of the game made back in June). Respawn now has a better idea of how fast players will join matches, and according to lead engineer Jon Schiring, they’ll be using that knowledge to “verify that we can spin up servers really quickly so players aren’t left waiting”. Further, he says that their matchmaking service capable of building nearly 24,000 matches every two seconds. As cool as that sounds, there were some issues there in that matches weren’t always full, so the join-in-progress system has been adjusted.

Where the first beta was to ensure the servers can support the influx of player numbers, the second has a goal of “really spiking” the number of simultaneous players online at once. To do so, they’re going to try and launch an event that’ll get as many people online at once as possible, but exactly what that is is currently unknown. The second beta will feature the Armed Hardpoint mode, along with the Base Koda map. Like the first one, it’ll be only for the PS4 and Xbox One.

Titanfall 2 releases in full for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 28. What did you think of the first beta? Let us know in the comments below.
