The Alternate Start mod by Arthmoor offers a different way to begin the game if you don’t want to watch the long beginning scene at Helgen. After selecting your race, you’ll be able to choose a brand-new life for your character.

There will be several options accessible that are much better than being a mere prisoner in some cold dungeon, including a city guard, an adventurer, an alchemist, and many other cool roles that can significantly improve your gameplay experience. It’s the perfect way to start a proper role-playing experience in the world of Skyrim.

Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch

The Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch mod by Arthmoor fixes a ton of bugs in the Special Edition of the game that haven’t been officially fixed by the developer in a single, simple-to-install file. The team behind the mod has corrected hundreds of issues related to gameplay, quests, NPCs, objects, items, texts, and placements. The best part is that it was created to work with as many other mods as possible, so you’ll have no issues improving the game further on.

Rich Merchants of Skryim

Rich merchants mod for Skyrim

The Rich Merchants of Skryim mod by Micahghost increases every in-game merchant’s extremely low gold level to 10,000 gold. This allows players to sell valuable items without constantly looking for buyers, which is particularly beneficial for those players who tend to stockpile loot or make use of crafting trades like alchemy, smithing, or enchanting. It’s a very light mod, and works well with most others. The additional in-game economy features are integrated seamlessly.

Cloaks & Capes

Cloaks and capes mod for Skyrim

The Cloaks & Capes mod by volvaga0 adds “Fur Cloak” and “Linen Cape” with eight different color options, including red, purple, blue, green, yellow, black, white, and leather. There are also five different types of fur cloaks: White, Black, Brown, Snowy Sabre, and Vale Sabre.

Dawnguard, College of Winterhold, and Dark Brotherhood will now have their distinctive capes, too. This mod also allows you to only craft the Whiterun guard capes while you are at Whiterun. The same applies to other relevant areas in the game.

Apocalypse – Magic of Skyrim

It also includes staves and scrolls for the new spells, 31 for each school. All new spells can be purchased and plundered from the same sources as the vanilla ones, and they’re fully compatible with all well-known magic scaling addons. Spell vendors replenish all the new spell books once every 48 hours.

It’s worth noting that this mod is compatible with many other mods that influence the speed of movement.

Free Crafting

Free Crafting mod for Skyrim

The Free Crafting mod by Highfiveghost eliminates the limitation of needing particular perks and ingredients to manufacture different items. This implies that you can make any armor, weapons, arrows, home materials, ingots, leather, and leather strips for free at any forge, smelter, or tanning rack without any additional supplies or benefits. In the forge, you can also discover craftable soul gems, lockpicks, and gold, as well as Thieves Guild leather armor, Blades armor, and Nightingale armor. Note that all this works already at level 1 character progression, so start crafting immediately.

Stones of Barenziah

Stones of Barenziah mod for Skyrim

The Stones of Barenziah mod by toaDime adds all 24 Stones of Barenziah (Unusual Gems) that you must locate and gather for the “No Stone Unturned” quest. After installing this mod, you’ll have all the quest markers thanks to this easy update. Once you bring an “Unusual Gem” to Vex and she assigns you the task of finding all 24 of them, all the markers will be instantly added to your game.

In case the mod starts conflicting with something else, try moving the mod to the bottom of the load order.

Realistic Conversations

Realistic Conversations mod for Skyrim

Realistic Conversations by Gorgulla alters how NPCs interact in Skyrim. Now they converse with one another more frequently, and they’re less inclined to greet you from a distance. This will cause them to behave less like robots and more like real people. NPCs also become more astute, being able to tell whether someone has spoken to another NPC and will either speak to them or not.

They can also resume their conversations after a while. Expressions have also been redesigned to make NPCs express themselves when they ought to. Lastly, their faces appear more alive, demonstrating more natural emotions.

Realistic Ragdolls

Realistic Ragdolls mod for Skyrim

Realistic Ragdolls by Allie1718 replaces ragdolls to make them bend and twist realistically and fall more quickly while reducing the additional force applied to them to a more manageable level. It also offers a variety of force settings while reducing the force applied to ragdolls to a reasonable level.

The creators have also repaired an issue where ragdolls would launch themselves when killed with any weapon due to a lightning spell duration problem. If they get killed with stealth damage, arrows will no longer push bodies far away. Finally, ragdolls respond better to melee strikes; when more force is used, the greater the final hit damage.

Realistic Water

Realistic Water mod for Skyrim

The Realistic Water mod by isoku introduces a new water flow system in Skyrim, enabling water to bend around corners and vary pace depending on the terrain. Although the water in Special Edition is far better than it was in the original version of the game, water flow was applied carelessly to most bodies of water, sometimes creating very strange-looking, unrealistic water.

This mod restores the visual and aural distinctions between lakes, ponds, marshes, rivers, and oceans. The mod also adds new ambient sound effects, which can be heard in lakes, rivers, and oceans, while ponds stay silent.

Magical College of Winterhold

Magical College of Winterhold mod for Skyrim

Magical College of Winterhold mod by sable17 makes the college look like it’s an actual magic institute and not some kind of a barn. The goal of this makeover is to give the college a polished and captivating appearance, applying many changes to certain rooms. Now they include personalized decorations, carefully constructed using in-game textures and polygons.

Every NPC has its own distinctive room decor, enabling teachers to concentrate on living and practicing, while students on studying. Note that the starter player room has also been redesigned, including a player bed, secure storage, and many other features.

Imperious – Races of Skyrim

Imperious - Races of Skyrim mod for Skyrim

Imperious – Races of Skyrim by EnaiSiaion gives each race in the game three new racial skills and a quest to gain their racial powers. It also overhauls all racial abilities and stats in such a way that they can even be used by NPCs. Each mission unlocks one new power and three new passive abilities for each race.

The majority of the same racial skills and abilities are available to NPCs. For example, Elven Supremacy effectiveness is increased by 10% when it reaches level 100, and Gold and Glass replenishes up to 100% more quickly.

Lampposts of Skyrim

Lampposts of Skyrim mod for Skyrim

The Lampposts of Skyrim mod by Micahghost introduces major highways in the game, which now have adequate lighting. If you’ve always felt that the roads looked barren and empty in Skyrim, then these lampposts will light up your path. But you must first do him a favor before you can recruit him, and after that, the Riekling will agree to accompany you.

Campfire: Complete Camping System

The items added by the Dwemer Goggles and Scouter mod by volvaga0 are nothing short of awesome. Both give the ability to sense NPCs through walls, though they each have their nuances. The Goggles let you see at night, and the Scouter works like the ones you’d see in Dragon Ball Z. They highlight enemies and even color code them based on their threat level.

Ys Spell Tweaks

The Ys Spell Tweaks mod’ by YsCordelan makes being a mage even more enjoyable thanks to new abilities, lower cast times, and improved animations. Now all master spells only take a second to charge and can be cast with one hand. FPS Boost

The world of Skyrim can get really dark, and having to cast a spell to see isn’t always fun. With the Wearable Lanterns mod by Chesko though, you can wear a lantern around and see everything without a torch taking up one of your hands.

Deadly Bosses of Skyrim

Deadly Bosses of Skyrim

The Deadly Bosses of Skyrim mod by DarkClawRaven adds powerful bosses to the game to help you test your skills and abilities. No longer will you be able to breeze through every encounter with ease. Instead, you’ll need to bring your A-game to every fight, only coming out on top if you use all of your skills and abilities masterfully.

Lush Overhaul

Lush Overhaul

A Quality World Map

A Quality World Map

The Map in Skyrim has never been the best, but with the ‘A Quality World Map’ mod by Chesko you’ll be able to see roads and obstacles clearly. It’s ideal for anyone who plans to spend multiple hours exploring Skyrim’s far corners. It also gives a clean perspective of the world by eliminating all clouds from the map’s center. However, you can still see the clouds at the map’s boundaries.

Sofia Follower

Inigo Follower

Unique Uniques

Vivid Weathers

The Temple of Time: Kokiri’s Valley

The Temple of Time: Kokiri's Valley

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is unarguably a huge hit, but perhaps you’d like a bit more maturity in your adventures. Bring a piece of Link’s adventure into Skyrim with the Temple of Time mod by WallaceMacDuich, complete with a Master Sword to unlock, an Epona to ride, new characters to meet, and more.

Dwemer Storage Cube

Dwemer Storage Cube

The Dwemer Storage Cube by YsCordelan is a home you pull out of your pocket. Simply interact with it in your inventory and you’re transported to a safe haven where you can store gear, take a rest, and do pretty much anything else you’d do in a house.

Moonpath to Elsweyr

If you’re looking for a meaty expansion that introduces new characters, new questlines, new dungeons, and new monsters, then Moonpath to Elseyr by AnOldSock may be just the mod you’re looking for. Amazingly, it’s already been downloaded over 1 million times, which goes to show just how overwhelmingly popular it is.

Falskaar

Falskaar

Much akin to the aforementioned Moonpath to Elsewyr and The Forgotten City expansions, Falskaar by Yatagann is a vast new land for you to explore brimming with new monsters, new lore, and even a bunch of new voice-acted characters. There are over 20 hours of quests to dive into which will likely keep you busy till the cows mud crabs come home.

Immersive Citizens – AI Overhaul

Immersive Citizens - AI Overhaul

It’s no secret that the NPCs of Skyrim can be a little dumb, and if you’ve always wanted a more immersive experience where the AI is just a little smarter and can react to you more realistically, the Immersive Citizens mod by arnaud.dorchymont is a great one to check out. It greatly improves their behavior, and also makes them feel more dynamic as a result.

Diverse Dragons Collection

Diverse Dragons Collection

As it is, the dragon enemies of Skyrim are already impressive enough. Yet, the Diverse Dragons Collection mod by opusGlass expands the universe even more by introducing a whole ton of new dragon types you can encounter in the open world. They all come with unique models and textures, and can help to spice up subsequent playthroughs.

Relationship Dialogue Overhaul

Relationship Dialogue Overhaul

Let’s be real. The relationships you can forge in Skyrim are kinda lackluster at best. The Relationship Dialogue Overhaul mod by cloudedtruth solves that problem, or at the very least alleviates it by introducing tons of new voiced lines to expand the kinds of conversations you can have with the NPCs in-game. NPCs will have much more to say to you in-game, and they’ll feel more like people, and less like robots.

Divine Cities – Premier City Overhaul

Divine Cities - Premier City Overhaul

The towns and settlements of vanilla Skyrim look pretty damn good, but no one’s gonna say no to them looking even more impressive, right? That’s what the Divine Cities mod by Vexona aims to do. This mod is seriously impressive in that there’s so much more detail to admire in the major towns, along with overhauled flora and fauna, new pet companions to discover, and just more life overall.

Enhanced Nights

Enhanced Nights

It sounds simple, but once you have it installed, you’ll never go back. The Enhanced Nights mod by Katarn343 makes the night skies of Skyrim look even more beautiful. Stars are brighter, the aurora borealis looks even more romantic than usual, and the best part is that it works well with most other night mods you might already have installed.

Sacrosanct – Vampires of Skyrim

Sacrosanct - Vampires of Skyrim

If you’ve always felt like the vampiric features of Skyrim have been kinda disappointing, then Sacrosanct by EnaiSiaion is definitely the mod to get. This mod allows vampires access to a whole host of new abilities and progression mechanics, including being able to expend blood to resurrect themselves and using spoken commands to force others to do their bidding.

Let’s Ride Durnehviir

best-skyrim-xbox-mods-lets-ride-durnehviir

Durnehviir is arguably one of the coolest dragons in Skyrim. Not only is he an undead dragon, he’s a necromancer. How metal is that? You even get a dragon shout to summon him in battle, but what if you could do more than that?

With the Let’s Ride Durnehviir mod by john255, you gain the ability to do exactly what the mod says: you get to ride Durnehviir! Right after he teaches you the last part of the Soul Tear shout, you’ll learn the shout. If by chance you already did that, don’t worry—the shout is automatically added.

Disable Combat Boundary

best-skyrim-xbox-mods-disable-combat-boundary

Skyrim is, in many ways, drastically different from Oblivion. One of the smallest changes that most never notice is that enemies won’t follow you through boundaries, like cave openings and doors. Anything that requires Skyrim to load in a new cell, enemies can’t pass through. The Disable Combat Boundary mod by Mephy-kuns removes that restriction entirely so you can’t abuse that system!

Blackthorn, A Buildable Town in the Rift

best-skyrim-xbox-mods-blackthorn-buildable-town

The Hearthfire DLC was a step in the right direction for players to construct their own homes, but it always felt like it only scratched the surface. The Blackthorn mod by LD50365 made me realize what was missing: an entire town to build. Blackthorn is yours to customize, from weapon racks to merchants; in fact, the available options are more to the tune of over 400.

Immersive Patrols

best-skyrim-xbox-mods-immersive-patrols

Soon after your journey begins in Skyrim, you hear this talk of civil war between the Stormcloaks and Imperial Legion, but it never really feels like one. Immersive Patrols by Mandoo6435 aims to make Skyrim feel like there’s a war going on by adding roving packs of Stormcloaks, Thalmor, Imperials, and Dawnguard, among others.

It isn’t just window dressing, though. These groups will interact with one and an all-out fight can break out. If you end up choosing to side, say, with the Imperial, Stormcloaks will even attack you! Ultimately, Skyrim feels much more lively with this mod, and I’m all for it.

Common Clothes and Armors

best-skyrim-xbox-mods-common-clothes-and-armors
Image Source: NexusMods via Franklin Zunge

Why does everyone look like they shop at the same three merchants in Skyrim? Pick any NPC from a crowd and they’ll either be dressed as a dirty farmer, in full armor, or they came straight from the Cloud District.

The Common Clothes and Armors mod by Modder725 adds far more variety for you to wear, as well as NPCs. You can even craft some! My personal favorites are the “salvaged” armor sets, which only include portions of the armor, but with leather or chain to fill out the rest. It gives your Dragonborn a real adventurer’s look.

True Storms Special Edition

best-skyrim-xbox-mods-common-clothes-and-armors

I love atmosphere just as much as I love immersion, and the True Storms mod by fadingsignal is thick with atmosphere. While the weather in vanilla Skyrim is good, I wouldn’t mind a little more. This mod adds more variance to the weather, yet still retains that vanilla experience. The storms outside hit a lot differently when you can hear it from inside your home. And don’t get me started on the heavy dust storms on Solstheim!

Even Better Quest Objectives

best-skyrim-xbox-mods-even-better-quest-objectives

How often have you caught yourself wandering about Skyrim because of a bad quest objective? You can’t exactly rely on your journal, either. Hey, it happens to all of us, and it’d be nice to get some directions.

The Even Better Quest Objectives by WilliamImm affects over 200 quests and their quest markers, making it a lot easier to figure out where you’re headed. With that said, some of the quests related to riddles are left as is as that would defeat the purpose of the riddle.

DIRGE, the Roleplaying Overhaul

best-skyrim-xbox-mods-dirge-the-roleplaying-overhaul

You’ve been to High Hrothgar dozens of times, clocked in hundreds of hours in Skyrim, and now it’s time for a change. If you want to keep most of the aesthetic of Skyrim, but drastically change the game, the DIRGE mod by Mahin1 is for you.

DIRGE massively overhauls Skyrim to the point that it feels like an entirely new game. For example, combat feels deadlier. Enemies aren’t just harder to kill but are far more intelligent. Skills and perks were rebalanced and improved, and even Standing Stones have returned to their rightful place as Birthsigns, which provide their own bonuses.
