Shin Megami Tensei V: How to Recruit Demons

Originally announced back when the Nintendo Switch was officially unveiled, Shin Megami Tensei V is the latest entry in Atlus’s punishing turn-based JRPG series. Just like previous entries, this one takes place in modern Tokyo, after demons and angels have ravaged the entire land and transformed it into something unrecognizable. You take control of the Nahobino, a young high school student with the power to command demons. You won’t be able to save the world alone, though. Here’s how to recruit demons in Shin Megami Tensei V.

Recruiting Demons in Shin Megami Tensei V

Negotiating with demons is a feature staple of the SMT series, and it makes a return here as well. In order to strengthen your party and cover all affinities and weaknesses, you’ll need to recruit demons to join your cause, then fuse them to create more powerful ones. To do this, you’ll need to talk to them first and make them happy.

When in battle, you can choose the Talk option when it’s the Nahobino’s turn to act. Choose the demon you want to talk to, and a conversation will start where you must pick the right options to appease them.

The idea is to get a sense for the demon’s personality based on their design and the way they talk, then pick a response that you think they would be happy with. For instance, Pixie is generally a pretty agreeable demon, and you just have to agree with everything she says to get her to join you. Other demons, like Azumi, may value strength over all else, and it’s important to show that you can keep up with them.

Once you’ve appeased them enough (this may require you to give them Macca and items), they’ll automatically get added to your party.

One other thing to note is that you cannot recruit demons that are of a higher level than the Nahobino’s. However, if you do manage to appease them in a conversation, you can talk to them again once you hit the level requirement and they’ll join you immediately without needing you to go through the entire conversation again.
