Diablo 2: How to Change Difficulty

In most video games, changing the difficulty is as simple as opening up the main menu and clicking on the settings. For Diablo 2: Resurrected, there are a few more steps involved than simpling switching it out in the menus. Here is everything you need to know about how to change difficulty in Diablo 2.

Unlike Diablo 3, there are actually three different difficulty settings in Diablo 2: Resurrected: Normal, Nightmare, and Hell. The higher up in difficulty you go, the better loot you’ll receive, which really incentivizes you to increase it.

How to Change Difficulty in Diablo 2

Regardless of if you think you’re up to the challenge from the get-go, Diablo 2: Resurrected starts you out on Normal difficulty. This is because you actually need to unlock each new tier of difficulty as you clear each act.

Once you defeat Baal on Normal for the first time, Nightmare mode unlocks in the main menu for your next run. In order to unlock the next level up, Hell, you simply need to beat each act on Nightmare difficulty in Diablo 2.

It is important to note that you can only change the difficulty in the main menu of Diablo 2, as the game doesn’t let you adjust it mid-game.

Hardcore Mode

If those modes weren’t challenging enough for you, you can always toggle on Hardcore Mode by clicking on the Skull icon during the Character Select screen. As the name suggests, this challenging gameplay mode adds in permadeath, meaning that any time you die, the game starts over.

That is everything you need to know about how to change difficulty in Diablo 2. If you’re still on the hunt for more info about the game, be sure to check out all of the other tips, tricks, and breakdowns related to the game by searching Twinfinite.
