Blocking Attacks in Resident Evil Village

Like it or not, you will inevitably find yourself in a situation where you’re out of ammo and have to rely on melee attacks instead. When you’re getting up close and personal with your foes, you’ll also need to learn how to block their attacks so you don’t get immediately destroyed.

The good news is that you can block whether you’re empty-handed or equipped with any weapon. All you have to do is press and hold the L1 or LB button to have Ethan raise his hands up in a defensive manner.

You’ll still take damage through a block, but it won’t be quite as devastating as just taking the hit without any defenses at all. That being said, you can’t just guard against attacks all the time. Enemies will eventually be able to break your guard if that’s all you’re doing, and that can leave you stunned and vulnerable to more attacks.

In addition to just reducing incoming damage, blocking at the right time also serves as an animation cancel for other in-game actions that take up time. For instance, blocking while healing and reloading a weapon will cancel that animation, allowing you to get back into the action much faster than before.
