The first thing you need to know about poke checking is that positioning is vital to doing it correctly. If you’re behind or even parallel to a player you’re trying to get the puck away from, you’re pretty likely to trip them, which is a minor penalty.

To avoid tripping, you’ll want to make sure you’re in front of the puck carrier before you pull off your defensive manuever. Make sure that no other players are in front either in order to avoid tripping them as well.

Press RB on Xbox One or R1 on PS4 and your player will push their stick out and poke check the puck away from your opponent. This also works to help block and redirect passes and shots that come your way as well.

It is going to take some getting used to timing wise, but don’t trip, you’ll be a pro poker in no time.
