PlanetSide Arena’s version of Battle Royale will begin with players selecting a character class of either Assault, Engineer, or Medic. Players will then be placed in drop pods that will be used to land on the map. Each class will start with a jetpack, a vehicle, and class-specific abilities.

Daybreak refers to the three character classes as “initial character classes”, implying that there will be more added in the future. The developer also mentions that PlanetSide Arena will include a Massive Clash mode in addition to Solo and Team Battle Royale modes. Massive Clash will be a “Group vs. Group experience” that will also allow up to 500 players.

The studio also plans to add modes like Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, and Global Conquest with each new in-game season.

PlanetSide 2 fans concerned about how this may affect continued support of PlanetSide 2 need not worry. Daybreak also announced that PlanetSide 2 will be receiving a major update in 2019 that will add Oshur, a brand new continent. In addition, the studio is going to offer PlanetSide Arena closed beta access to “some of their most loyal and active Planetside 2 players.”

PlanetSide Arena is currently set to be released on Jan. 29, 2019, and there are two editions of the game available on Steam for pre-order. The Sanctuary Assault Edition ($19.99) comes with a Season 1 Battle Pass and the Assault Armor set. The Legendary Edition ($39.99) includes a Season 1 Battle Pass, three Class Armor sets, and the M-20 Tempest hoverbike Pack. Pre-ordering either edition will also give players Closed Beta access.
