Is Ni No Kuni 2 a Direct Sequel to the Original?
Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch earned critical acclaim for its gorgeous animation, charming characters, and brilliant story-telling. The touching tale of a young boy entering a strange and fantastical realm to save his mother was a huge hit when it released back in 2011 for PS3 (2013 in the west). The game was actually a reworked version of Ni No Kuni: Dominion of the Dark Djinn, which released exclusively on Nintendo DS a year earlier. Since that time, a spin-off title called Hotroit Stories launched on mobile devices in 2012, expanding the same story and characters of the main game. But that’s as far as it goes for young Oliver and his pals because Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom is not a direct sequel, featuring an entirely different protagonist, Evan Pettiwhisker Tildrum, and a host of new supporting characters.
That isn’t to say there aren’t several easter eggs that vaguely connect both, though. You’ll find several references to a young boy and his faerie companion, who bare an obvious resemblance to Oliver and Drippy from the original game. In addition, rather like Final Fantasy titles, many places in the land of Ni No Kuni share the same names in both games. There’s also plenty of crossover with the game’s musical score too.
So while you won’t be bumping into any of the same faces in the second game, Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom will still feel familiar to anyone who has played the original.
