The long hoped for Nintendo Direct was dropped on us like a Beyoncé album this morning and with it, among lots of other crazy news, came the announcement of a free update to Super Mario Odyssey. It’s not a new kingdom or anything wild and expansive like that, but it is a new competitive mini-game that does look pretty fun and fits in very well with what makes playing Super Mario Odyssey enjoyable: exploration.
It’s called “Balloon World” and in it, players through Super Mario Odyssey’s online features can take 30 seconds to either hide a balloon somewhere in a kingdom for someone else to find, or find someone else’s, with each challenge earning a score that will rank you up on a leaderboard. Here, let Nintendo explain it to you themselves:
“A new mini-game called Balloon World is coming to one of the highest-rated games of all time. Once players download the free update and complete the main story, Balloon World will become available. In “Hide It” mode, players have a certain amount of time to hide a balloon. In “Find It” mode, players have the same amount of time to locate balloons hidden by other players from around the world. Players can move up the rankings** by finding hidden balloons and becoming expert hiders. The free update will be released in February with new Snapshot Mode filters and new outfits.” via a press release from Nintendo
In case you’re wondering what the new outfits are, the Nintendo Direct showed at least three of them (we’re not sure if that’s all of them or not), and they are: Sunshine Shades & Outfit, Musician Hat & Outfit, and Knight Helmet & Armor. See the hastily taken screenshot above to see what they look like.
Like the press release blurb says, the update will be out some time next month. While it may not be a new kingdom like some were hoping, we’re not going to look a free update in the mouth.
