How to Block – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Recommended Videos

For those who want to survive the combat in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you will need to learn how to block and dodge incoming attacks. Given that enemies are far more aggressive and dangerous this time around, it’s important to master all the various combat techniques offered in this open world adventure game. In order to block an attack, you will need to have a shield equipped as this will not only allow you to deflect a blow, but also parry one as well. To simply block, just lock onto an enemy by holding down the left trigger and Link will raise his shield. He can stop most basic attacks, however, be careful because every shield has a durability and they can break mid-fight. Try not to engage in a big battle if your shield is at half durability, as this can become a liability if it breaks and leaves you completely defenseless.

Certain enemies, like the four-legged Guardians, can completely one shot your shield, destroying it instantly unless you time a perfect parry. Understanding which types of blows you can block is critical, but make sure to not just hide behind your shield and let an enemy wail away at it.  Only block when it’s absolutely needed, otherwise you are just going to break this item faster. You always want to be mobile or perfect guarding an attack to provide openings. Being defensive is good for studying attack patterns, but tanking actual hits isn’t as viable of a strategy in the game. Combining a block with a side hop or backflip will greatly increase your chances in combat.
