Owlboy truly caught people off-guard when it hit the PC toward the tail end of 2016. It had long been thought that the game would never actually arrive, having taken 10 years to make from start to finish. Owlboy is a story-driven platformer that tasks you with exploring an entirely new world all the while narrowly avoiding (or battling) a ragtag bunch of sky pirates.

Otus (the protagonist) can’t fight off a bunch of pirates alone, though, so you’re able to recruit his friends to help him gun down enemies, or offer other handy abilities or techniques to aid your adventure. Its art-style just oozes with retro charm, and its gameplay arguably stands as one of the finest examples of 2D platforming. The controls may not be perfect, but take the time to get used to them and Owlboy won’t be an experience you forget quickly.
