Senior Editor ZhiQing Wan: Dark Souls III doesn’t like backdrops that exist purely for aesthetic reasons. Every structure, every building, and every peak you can spot far off in the distance, you can bet you’ll visit at some point. Couple that with responsive combat gameplay that puts you in complete control of your character, as well as heaps of story and lore that ties up this saga, and you’ve got an action RPG that simply screams “polished” at every turn.

Exploration and the venturing into the unknown remains the highlight of Dark Souls III. No, this game doesn’t hold your hand very much, and yes, the boss fights can get rather challenging. But those are the very aspects of the game that just make your inevitable victories and discoveries taste that much sweeter.
