Today at the Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida, we finally got our first look The Last Jedi, the eighth film in the main franchise. Panel host Josh Gad brought executive producer Kathleen Kennedy, Daisy Ridley (Rey), BB-8, John Boyega (Finn), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Kelly Marie Tran and writer/director Rian Johnson on to reveal the trailer and talk shop about the film. Ridley revealed that the relationship between Rey and Luke won’t be what many expect, stating that “it’s difficult when you meet your heroes.” She also said that she’s most excited for “Luke’s first words,” which got laughter. Boyega, meanwhile, stated that Finn is still in recovery, and that “he’s not playing this time…he’s still trying to find his place in the galaxy,” showing screenshots of his character in the now iconic jacket. Regarding the relationship between him and Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron, the relationship between them will progress throughout the film.
Along with the old characters, new heroes will join The Last Jedi as well. Tran will be joining the Star Wars franchise as Rose, a Resistance member working in maintenance. She’s said to have the “biggest part” of the new characters in the film and will be an unlikely hero pulled into an adventure with Finn. Meanwhile, as Hamill describes Luke, there’ll be mystery about him throughout the film relating to his absence, even though Hamill’s positive there’ll be outside media eventually covering up the gaps. He’ll continue to be “significantly important to this film,” don’t worry. Then there was the poster, which you can see in all its shining glory right here.

Then there was the main event, and it didn’t disappoint. In fact, it was so good that Johnson had the crew play it a second time just so he could watch it with other attendees. We won’t spoil it all for you, but suffice to say, Rey’s growing into her Force powers, the First Order won’t take the defeat of Starkiller base, and Luke Skywalker is doing things differently than Jedi of the past. Poe Dameron, Captain Phasma, and BB-8 made brief appearances, as did Kylo Ren and his destroyed helmet. The Last Jedi has been compared to Empire Strikes Back in terms of tone, and if nothing else, Johnson certainly seems to have that nailed down.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will release in theaters on December 15.
