But even if you have no intention of trying to level up every single one of them, even focusing on a few can be time consuming. To help you get into the action and enjoying yourself, we’ve put together a few tips to help you hit max level on those characters quickly.

Take on Quests

PvZ: Garden Warfare 2 has optional quests that sort of serve as bounties for you to complete as you play the game. They range from anything between vanquishing foes with a particular ability to playing a certain mode. They are a necessary part of obtaining Stars to use in the game, but they also have an extra perk that players trying to level up will find quite useful.

Completing quests earns you a pin on the bulletin board. For every five pins, you’ll earn a higher XP multiplier. Your life will become a lot easier once you unlock the “2X” multiplier  after completing 20 quests. The multiplier applies to all things, which means that even those easy kills you can get in the Backyard Battleground will start to make a difference.

Even better is the fact that this multiplier is the only perk that carries between all of your characters.

Turf Takeovers

Out of all the modes available in PvZ: Garden Warfare 2, Turf Takeovers easily offer the most opportunities to earn glorious XP. The two modes are that fall under this umbrella are “Herbal Assault” and “Gardens and Graveyards.” One team is tasked with defending control points while the other is tasked with taking them over.

What makes these modes so perfect is that there are so many ways to level up, and you can vanquish enemies to your heart’s content since there is no score cap. As long as the session is running, you can keep eliminating opponents. Adding to their usefulness, the modes are perfect for grinding either online or offline (although, online will give a bit more). All opponents count as heroes in Turf Takeovers, so killing them offline with a 2X Multiplier is over 50 XP, while killing them online will net you a cool 200 XP. You’ll get XP for every second spent standing in the capture zone, for defending allies, for eliminating summoned plants and zombies, for healing, and for assisting in vanquishes (which you’ll get a ton of).

Turf Takeover is one grand XP fest, especially if you’re on the offensive and can win the whole session. That will give you just over 30 minutes of prime XP collection time.

You Have to Put in The Work

One thing that’s easy to forget is that you don’t earn any XP if you don’t actually do anything. Unlike most games that give you XP for being in the game or being on the winning team, PvZ: Garden Warfare 2 will not do that. If you want to level up, you’re going to have to put in some work. That means you’ll need to be shooting, healing, defending, reviving, capturing, and taking over everything on your own. Also, you only earn XP for characters you are directly in control of.

Playing offline allows you to summon your other characters to play as your friends. You can swap between them at any time, but you’ll only earn XP for the particular character you’re controlling at that time. Be aggressive and lead your team in order to reap the maximum rewards.

Get shots on every enemy so you can at least earn XP for assisting, heal allies even if they’re missing only a sliver of health, plant assistance in pots, and cover all objectives. That will ensure that you make the most out of your grind.

Play Online if You’re Confident

Playing online offers one major difference: a large boost in XP for killing heroes. Players are more unpredictable than AI, so the game rewards you for vanquishing humans instead of the computer. Of course, this means that they have a much better chance of getting rid of you as well. They can swap characters after any death, will play more like you utilizing cover and trying to sneak pot shots, and they will run for the hills when things get bad.

The major draw of playing online is that your teammates will play like you as well, minimizing your chances at getting a lot of action. but, if you’re confident in your abilities, then you should definitely give online some attention when you have the characters you want.

With these tips you’ll find yourself leveling up and promoting characters in no time.
