Negotiating With Shadows in Persona 5

Recommended Videos

Persona 5 brings back a cool new mechanic that was a big part of the Shin Megami Tensei series: demon negotiating. Instead of acquiring new Personas through Shuffle Time like in the past two games, players will have to talk to the Shadows to convince them to either give them money, an item, or join their party as a Persona. You can only start negotiating after you’ve progressed through the story enough to infiltrate your first Palace.

To start negotiations, you first have to knock down all enemies on the field. This can be done pretty easily with the gun or by using a spell that exploits their weak points. After they’ve all been knocked down, you can perform a Hold Up where you can either initiate an All-Out Attack or start talking to them. If you choose to talk to them, you’ll have a few different options to choose from, which will determine what rewards you get from the encounter. Keep in mind that you have to pay close attention to the things the Shadows say to get a read on their personality, and then choose the responses that you think they’ll appreciate. Shadows are also more likely to join you if their health is low.
