Don’t Be Afraid to Change Characters Mid-Match
One of the key features in Overwatch is the ability to change your character during a match. This is definitely not a mechanic to be taken lightly and often times switching your active character will be vital to capturing/defending objectives and winning team fights. There are many characters in Overwatch and as such, certain characters will innately be weaker against others. Strategically using this imbalance between characters to your advantage is often referred to as a countering. The goal is to counter as much of the enemy team as you can, while keeping character synergy within your own team.
For instance, stationary characters, such as Bastion, have a difficult time avoiding high damage ranged characters, such as Widowmaker. Should the enemy team have a strong Widowmaker on their side, consider switching to D.Va who’ll have no trouble dealing with a squishy sniper with her high health pool and quick mobility. If you manage to capture an objective as Tracer, but now need to hold the position, consider switching to Torbjorn. Torbjorn’s turrets will most likely provide a stronger and safer defense than Tracer’s fast movements which are generally utilized to attack a team’s weaker members behind enemy lines. Just be sure to communicate your character swaps with the team so they don’t get a Winston bubble when they expected a Reinhardt shield.
