God of War III, originally released for the PS3 back in 2010, is making its way to the PS4 as God of War III Remastered. I’ll say this much; if you’ve already played the PS3 version of the game, don’t bother getting this one unless you’re a really huge fan of God of War III. The PS4 version will run at 1080p, 60 frames per second, and also feature a brand new photo mode where you can take stylish screenshots of the game and share them on social media, but not much else.
God of War III also introduces a brand new weapon for Kratos, called the Cestus. It’s a pair of gauntlets that allows him to perform grappling moves and attacks. Aside from all that, however, I’m afraid the game doesn’t bring anything else to the table. There isn’t any new content in the game, so you’ll basically be playing the same game from 2010, except in a higher resolution and with a smoother frame rate.
Having said that, huge fans of the series will be very pleased with the technical upgrades to this remastered version of the game. The 60fps frame rate allows for much smoother combat and responsive dodging. In the remastered version, boss fights look even more epic, and the gigantic scale of the game really comes through as the camera pans over the large crumbled buildings available for Kratos to plunder. The game looks even better on the PS4, yes, but I’m not sure a visual upgrade is quite enough to convince players to purchase it a second time.
God of War III is not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination; the platforming puzzles require thought and they’re always fun to pull off. The combat system itself is addictive and it’s always a pleasure to watch Kratos execute fancy attacks at just the press of a button. However, we’ve already seen all of this back in the original 2010 version of the game. There is no additional content whatsoever, aside from the technical boosts and the new photo mode.
I hesitate to recommend God of War III Remastered to anyone who’s already played the PS3 version, simply because there isn’t quite enough new content here to justify a second purchase. If you did skip out on this instalment in the series, however, God of War III is a great addition to the franchise and it’s definitely worth a look for newcomers.
God of War III Remastered will be made available for the PS4 on 14th July this year.
