Destiny 2: Crucible Beginner’s Tips and Tricks

The Crucible is Destiny 2’s competitive multiplayer mode, featuring two teams of four duking it out over team deathmatch and objective-based modes. It can be very daunting for new players who have never played competitive multiplayer in the original Destiny, or are only used to fighting AI enemies in the game’s PvE environment.

Like other factions in Destiny 2, the Crucible can provide powerful loot and engrams for completing milestones and challenges. So even if you’re not interested in dealing with the PvP offering, it is worth a few games when your power level has ground to a halt and need new gear. Here are some tips and tricks to do well in the Crucible.

Check Your Radar

In the upper-left corner of the screen is the radar and it functions exactly as it does in PvE. The edges of the circular radar will glow red when enemies are in a certain direction, while sections will light up when they are nearby. It does not give the exact location of players, but gives you a heads-up of where players might be coming from and prepare.

Don’t Rush In Alone

This is a team-based game, and going lone wolf will get you killed easily. Stay with your team to provide support for one another during firefights, capture points quicker, and dispatch those single enemies in mere seconds who did not get this memo. Two guns are better than one.

Stick Together, But Don’t Group Up

Though staying as a team is a good idea, do not stand shoulder to shoulder with teammates! Spread out a little bit, so the enemy can’t wipe multiple players with a well-placed rocket or grenade. Especially in tight corridors where having good aim is trivial when everyone is bunched together. It makes it way easier to target your whole team when you stand that way.

Always Be Flanking

If you see your team together shooting at the opposition in one direction, don’t join the crowd. Take a different path that can give you the jump on the enemy and shoot them from a direction they’re not expecting. You’ll either rack up multiple kills by yourself, or take the heat off your team so that they can move forward and focus fire on players who stayed to fight.

Auto-Rifles Are Your Best Friend

Your choice of weaponry is important against other players vs AI. Power Level is disabled for the Crucible, so you don’t have to pick a high level weapon that you’re terrible with. Pick what you’re most comfortable with. A good starter weapon is an auto-rifle due to the minimal recoil, less missed shots, and easier to lead a moving target. Also, aim for the head for critical damage. A lot of players stick with auto-rifles, too.

Get the Power Ammo

While your Kinetic and Energy weapons have ammo at the beginning a Crucible match, your Power weapon does not. Power ammo can be picked up at certain spots in the map. The spots are always marked on your HUD, and each spot has a specific countdown timer for when it’s available to grab. The Power weapon can get one-hit kills easily, which could turn the decision of a close match. Stick with grenade and rocket launchers for multiple kills, or causing enough splash damage for a teammate to clean up the rest.
