Undertale Gets a Free Follow-Up in Time for Halloween

Deltarune, a free follow-up to Undertale was cryptically announced and subsequently released on the game's official Twitter, this Halloween morning.

The Twitter account for the hit indie game, Undertale, tweeted some cryptic messages yesterday. It was a series of tweets asking for people to engage with a survey that will help them put together what would seem to be a follow-up to Undertale, revealed to be titled Deltarune. The tweets note that “it is far from complete” and that this survey would help them realize the project fully.

So, fast forward 24 hours later and the account is back at it, tweeting about the excitement about being on the precipice of connection, with us here to help them realize a new future through the aforementioned survey. The 24-hour surprise turned out to be a link to a website with a download link for the so-called survey: deltarune.com. A keen fan might notice that Deltarune is actually an anagram for Undertale, and that the Delta Rune is a crest seen in Undertale.

The website itself has some cryptic messages hinting at what the potential themes of the next game might be. The website has text on it that reads:

WELCOME

PLEASE READ THESE FINAL WARNINGS.

THEN, TAKE IT IN YOUR

HANDS.

* THERE MAY BE MOVING OR FLASHING IMAGERY.

* YOU MAY HAVE TO OVERRIDE SECURITY PROTOCOLS TO USE THE PROGRAM.

* FOR PUBLIC SAFETY YOU ARE ADVISED TO REFRAIN FROM DISCUSSION OF THE PROGRAM FOR 24 HOURS

* YOU ACCEPT EVERYTHING THAT WILL HAPPEN FROM NOW ON

Below this message are download links for both the Windows and Mac versions of Deltarune, at no cost to you. Two lines in the warning message catch my attention in particular. The one regarding taking it “in your own hands,” and the one that says “you accept everything that will happen from now on.” These two lines seem to denote a theme of giving up control, and also accepting responsibility in some way. It will be interesting to see how this theme plays out in the alleged survey, if it does indeed turn out to be just that.

Let’s hope that this is, in fact, a Halloween treat and not some dastardly trick.
