Mori and The Riddler
Batman: The Enemy Within – Episode 1 Story Summary
Batman: The Enemy Within kicks off with Bruce Wayne going undercover at a casino. An international businessman by the name of Rumi Mori is here, and Bruce is looking to uncover some information or evidence that will allow him to take the criminal into custody. However, before Bruce can make his move, some thugs enter the casino to confront Mori. Their boss is none other than the Riddler, who quickly takes control of the whole casino and captures a few hostages as well.
Bruce manages to sneak out of the casino through a side exit, and he promptly gets into his Batsuit. The GCPD are quickly made aware of the situation, and Commissioner Gordon asks how he should proceed with the assault. You can either tell him to bust in through the front doors, or create a diversion with tear gas. In the meantime, the Riddler appears to have some unfinished business with Mori, and he proceeds to torture the man by slicing off his fingers with a contraption he built himself.
After the GCPD breaks in, Batman and the Riddler engage in a brawl. Before too long, the Riddler takes off, and throws him a puzzle box to solve.
When the GCPD finally have control over the situation, they manage to arrest some of Riddler’s thugs, including his right-hand man. At this point, federal agent Amanda Waller shows up at the scene and introduces herself. She expresses her disappoval at Gordon’s incompetence in capturing criminals, while Gordon says that she goes too far. Batman can either express his loyalty to Gordon, or be open to the idea of working with Waller. We’re also introduced to federal agent Iman, who tries to do a psych-evaluation of Batman. You can wave her off, or answer her question.
Back at Wayne Enterprises
Batman: The Enemy Within – Episode 1 Story Summary
When Batman gets back to the Batcave, he and Alfred examine the puzzle box Riddler gave them, and they attempt to solve it. After a bit of inspection, Bruce finds that he’s able to unlock Riddler’s message by spinning the flattened box on a gramophone with its needle. The box gives off some sort of micro pulse, and Bruce decides to ask Lucius Fox for help.
He calls Lucius on the phone, and the two agree to meet at Wayne Enterprises. We also find out that his daughter Tiffany is starting her first day at work there as well. In Bruce’s office, he and Lucius start examining the flattened box and the pulse. Before the discussion goes any further, Tiffany interrupts them with a small flying drone she created. She gives it to Bruce as a gift. When she asks if she can help them out with deciphering the pulse, Bruce has the choice of either accepting her offer or turning her away.
After Tiffany leaves, Bruce and Lucius decide to head to the R&D department to examine the box further. However, Iman and another federal agent arrive at the office with a few questions for Bruce. They suspect that Bruce might have some criminal connection, and they ask him a few questions about John Doe. It is then revealed that John Doe was released from Arkham Asylum some time ago, and Bruce himself was listed as his emergency contact. Before they can continue their conversation, the emergency alarm is sounded, and Bruce gets a call from Lucius. It turns out that Lucius managed to solve Riddler’s puzzle, but says that it’s too late for him. A large explosion goes off, and Lucius dies in the blast.
John Doe at the Funeral
Batman: The Enemy Within – Episode 1 Story Summary
At the funeral, Tiffany is heartbroken over the death of her father and talks about how she never got to spend much time with him because he was always busy at Wayne Enterprises. When she asks Bruce whether he had anything to do with Lucius’ death, you can either lie to her or tell her the truth. If you tell the truth, Bruce’s relationship with her will become strained, and she’ll be distrustful of him.
Soon after, John Doe (who’s better known by us as Joker) shows up at the funeral looking for Bruce. He tells Bruce that he needs his help, and he wants him to meet some of his friends. Agreeing or denying him will result in a different reaction, which could potentially lead him to cause a scene during the funeral. John then makes mention of the Riddler, and talks about how he hates him. Bruce asks him for a lead on the Riddler, and John reveals that he has a hideout somewhere in the East End. John also promises to look out for more leads on his whereabouts.
Bruce then has the choice of either placing a tracker on John, or trusting him to come back with information.
The Riddler’s Puzzle
Batman: The Enemy Within – Episode 1 Story Summary
Batman meets up with Gordon to discuss the information he got from John. After examining some areas in the East End, they deduce that the Riddler must be holed up in an abandoned water tower there. At the water tower, they’re soon trapped inside the building, and they realize that this is a puzzle the Riddler set up for them, and they’ll have to solve it if they want to go free.
They also discover the dead body of one of Waller’s agents, as well as the contact information of each of the other agents under her charge. The Riddler’s computer also contains an email from one of his associates, saying that he’s gone too far and that they don’t want to risk getting Batman’s attention.
Upon examining the dead body and their surroundings, Batman figures out how to get past the Riddler’s puzzle, which includes a speaker that can emit sonic blasts to rupture a person’s eardrums. The Riddler then appears on a large television monitor (via webcam and Skype, I assume) to taunt Batman. He says that Waller’s agency made him what he is, and he accuses Batman of sacrificing innocent lives to get further.
Later on, when Gordon asks Batman what Riddler meant by him sacrificing innocent lives, you can either lie to him or tell him the truth about Lucius being one of his allies. If you tell him the truth, Gordon will hesitate for a moment before deciding to trust you, and pretend that he never heard any of this.
Interrogation Time
Batman: The Enemy Within – Episode 1 Story Summary
Back at the Batcave, Bruce and Alfred try to figure out how Riddler is planning to attack all of the federal agents. Upon closer inspection of the micro pulse from the box he sent them earlier, as well as the mobile phones of the agents, Bruce realizes that the Riddler plans on using homing missiles to track down each of the agents’ locations through their mobile phones. By using the phones to emit a signal, it can call in a missile. This was how Lucius was killed.
However, Bruce still needs to find out where Riddler is, and where he’s kept the missiles. At this point, you can choose to either interrogate Mori as Bruce, or interrogate the Riddler’s right-hand man as Batman. If you choose Mori, Alfred warns that Waller might become suspicious of Bruce Wayne, but choosing the right-hand man might leave Gordon feeling snubbed, as he’s Waller’s prisoner, and the interrogation could be seen as an assertion of Waller’s authority.
For our playthrough, we went with the right-hand man, but didn’t use violence while interrogating him. Batman eventually finds out that Riddler is on a ship near the bay. Before leaving, one of Gordon’s subordinates tells Batman that Gordon is probably still going to be upset with him going behind his back for the interrogation, but he’ll most likely appreciate the fact that he didn’t use violence in the process.
Saving the Agents
Batman: The Enemy Within – Episode 1 Story Summary
Upon arriving at the ship, Batman manages to sneak in close enough to take down most of Riddler’s thugs. Iman and two other agents have also been captured. However, Riddler manages to outsmart Batman, and he traps both him and Iman inside a cage, while the other two agents are trapped inside smaller contraptions where they can get beheaded.
The Riddler then decides to play a question and answer game. For every answer Batman gets right, the Riddler will let loose a sonic blast, which could kill Iman if she’s exposed to too many. For every answer he gets wrong, the Riddler will kill one of the agents. You can answer his questions however you want. Before answering the third question, Batman uses his drone to send a signal to one of the smaller missiles to break open the cage. Batman and Riddler engage in yet another brawl, and he manages to take him down, while also thwarting the Riddler’s attempt to send all of the missiles into Gotham City.
However, before the Riddler is properly taken into custody, he’s shot by a poison dart that kills him. We find out that it was most likely one of his associates that had betrayed him. In our playthrough, we ended up getting one federal agent killed, and this left Iman feeling guilty over her own survival. Contrary to what Gordon’s subordinate said after the interrogation, Gordon himself was still pretty damn pissed at Batman about the interrogation, and apparently not using any violence at all didn’t have any impact whatsoever on his reaction.
Waller expresses her approval of Batman’s methods, and she says that she’s looking forward to working closely together. To be more specific, she says, “I’m looking forward to working with you, Bruce Wayne,” revealing that she’s aware of Batman’s identity.
