The network confirmed the news in a tweet after it was announced during the premiere of yesterday’s two-hour respective documentary on the franchise; The Walking Dead: The Journey So Far.

Entertainment Weekly also reports that Season 8 will begin in late 2017, and Scott Gimple will stay on board as showrunner for the series.

In a statement, AMC president Charlie Collier expressed the network’s “joy to partner with Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, and some of the hardest-working people in television to bring The Walking Dead to the fans.”

The premier episode for Season 7 of The Walking Dead is due to debut in less than a week’s time, this coming Sunday, the 23rd of October, beginning at 9pm PST on AMC.

For those who have been keeping along, Season 6 ended with a huge, somewhat controversial cliffhanger that will hopefully be resolved as soon as the first episode kicks off.
