Earlier this week, a Nintendo representative confirmed that Square Enix’s upcoming Nintendo Switch JRPG, The World Ends With You: Final Mix, will not enable Pro Controller support. This news was revealed during a demo event at PAX West 2018.
During the demo walkthrough with USGamer, the representative revealed the two control schemes that will make up The World Ends With You: Final Mix. The first simply relies on the touchscreen while the Nintendo Switch is undocked. The other method revolves around the Joy-Con and will allow a friend to hop on and play local co-op with you at any time.
While it is certainly disappointing that The World Ends With You: Final Mix won’t allow players to use the Pro Controller, it isn’t entirely surprising considering the series’ origins. Originally released for the Nintendo DS, and later ported to mobile phones, The World Ends With You utilized the handheld’s unique dual touch screens. According to a Square Enix Creators’ Roundtable, the company created the original with the intent that it could only be played on the DS. While that has obviously changed, the structure of their ideology remains the same. Â
The World Ends With You: Final Mix will be released for Nintendo Switch on Oct. 12 at a retail and digital price of $49.99.
