Zelda Link’s Awakening: Story Summary & Ending Explained

Secret of the Wind Fish

Recommended Videos

Once Link defeats an armored enemy in the Ancient Ruins cave, he finds an old stone mural on the wall with an image of what appears to be the mystical Wind Fish, which just looks like a whale with strange markings over its body. The Owl that has been guiding Link is also seen in the mural.

Once Link examines it, the mural reads “To the finder.. the isle of Koholint is but an illusion. Human, monster, sea, sky… a scene on the lid of a sleeper’s eye… Awake the dreamer and Koholint will vanish much like a bubble on a needle… Castaway… You should know the truth!”

After reading, Link actually speaks to himself and utters the words, “…What? Illusion?”

After walking back outside the ancient ruins, Link is greeted once again by the guiding Owl. The owl knows that Link has read the mural in the cave but he states that even though the mural says that the entire island is but a dream, nobody is actually entirely sure of that.

“Just as you cannot know if a chest holds treasure until you open it, so you cannot tell if this is a dream until you awaken. The only one who knows for sure is the Wind Fish. Trust your feelings… Someday you will discover the answer.”

Obviously, it seems that Koholint Island is, indeed, all a dream and everyone/everything on the island has been brought into existence via the Wind Fish.

After completing the sixth dungeon, the Face Shrine, Link hears a voice that’s calling him to the mountain, the mountain where the giant Wind Fish egg lies.

The owl also pays Link a visit after this dungeon and tells him that the monsters on the island are terrified of the Wind Fish to be awakened and that they are planning to stop Link and take over the island.

“The monsters’ power is real! They may conquer the island and destroy their foes! That day may come soon.”
