This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Total War Three Kingdoms is a grand strategy game in which you’ll take on the mighty warlords of ancient China in a bid to become Emporer. But you’ll have to rely on more than just savvy battle tactics to emerge victoriously; politics plays just as an important role as the fighting. Luckily, you can team up with a buddy in a joint venture to rule the Middle Kingdom if you’re so inclined. Here’s how to play co-op multiplayer in Total War Three Kingdoms.

How it Works

Two players can embark on the same story campaign in Three Kingdoms, playing from different computers as either friend or allies.

Regardless, of which way you go, you’ll also have the ability to change the game’s victory conditions by way of a unique treaty in the diplomacy tab called ‘Shared Mandate.’

Leaving the treaty unsigned will keep the victory conditions they would be in a single-player mode:

  • To win, one player must control three capitals, which causes the other player to lose.
  • One player is automatically declared the campaign winner if the others are destroyed.
  • Alliances can still be forged under these terms, but the victory conditions won’t change unless you sign the ‘Shared Mandate.’

However, if both players sign the treaty for a shared mandate, the victory conditions reflect a more co-operative:

  • To win, both players must control three capitals and become Emporers.
  • If either player dies then the campaign is lost for both.
  • Note that the ‘Shared Mandate’ can be canceled and the victory conditions changed to normal at any time.

Of course, if you’d rather just play a co-operative battle, that can be arranged as well. You don’t have to engage in a full campaign to experience co-op in Three Kings.

How to Start a Multiplayer Game

Starting a co-operative multiplayer game works in almost exactly the same way regardless of whether you want to experience a full campaign or just a battle.

From the main menu, simply head over to the multiplayer screen by clicking the ‘Multiplayer’ option. Now it’s a case of picking whether you want to play a campaign or battle and then starting a private server.

Once you arrive in the multiplayer set-up screen you’ll see a bunch of other servers. Ignore those and choose either ‘Host Campaign’ or ‘Host Battle’ depending on which game mode you’re wanting to play.

Once you’ve started the server you’ll need to access your Friends list and invite your buddy into the server. You will also have to set up a password to protect it from randoms, so be sure to note that down and pass it on to your friend.
