Finish Off Substories
With how much Yakuza 6’s main story draws you in, it’s quite likely that you’ll have missed a few substories along the way. Substories can be found as you advance through the game’s various chapters, with some unlocking at a certain point in the story, while others will unlock once you’ve completed certain objectives or other substories.
There are 51 substories in total, and there’s a handy guide up from the Japanese version on PSN Profiles. Just check off the ones you complete, and work towards getting the rest. It’s important to note that each hostess has a substory that you can only see by maxing out their level, and Snack New Gaudi has a substory for each of the regulars. It might take you a while, but the substories in Yakuza 6 are easily one of its best elements.
Fight Jo Amon
This ties into completing substories actually, as defeating Jo Amon will be the final 51st substory of the game. If you’re familiar with the Yakuza series, Amon is no stranger to you, as he or his family members have functioned as secret bosses in every single game.
Yakuza 6’s Amon is no pushover as you’d expect, with his own deadly set of moves on top of the ability to use exploding drones and robot vacuums during battle. The first half of Amon’s fight isn’t terribly difficult, but halfway through he puts up a barrier that significantly reduces the damage you do, and the drones and vacuums really start coming in. Make sure you bring a ton of healing items to this fight, and focus on restoring Kiryu’s health and unleashing Heat Actions against the boss. You can see even more tips for fighting Amon in our trophies guide.
Play Through on Legendary Difficulty
Once you’ve beaten Yakuza 6 once, you’ll unlock the option to play through on Legendary Difficulty. As you’d expect, this significantly ups the difficulty of battles, but you will be able to start New Game +, letting you carry over all of Kiryu’s bumped up stats and skills. This can not only be helpful for the more difficult fights, but also leads directly to getting the achievement for raising all of Kiryu’s stats to 300. If you found yourself missing substories or anything as well, it might even be more fun to just restart the game and be a completionist about everything.
Collect All Those Cats
Although not a substory, one particularly cute side activity in Yakuza 6 involves befriending cats and bringing them to the Nyan Nyan Cat Cafe. Each cat needs to be fed food that you can buy at the cafe or a few other stores, and the key is finding which food each cat prefers. You get rewarded with a little bit of XP for each cat, but even better, you can head to the cafe and see them just hanging out, or even sit down and pet one. You can find the cats by simply wandering around Kamurocho and Onomichi and they’re pretty easy to spot, as you’ll hear them mewing quite loudly and a blue dot will appear on your map. However, they do appear at random so it might take a while to track every cat down.
We won’t spoil anything but if you collect them all there’s a pretty cute scene, and the cats can even give you items. It’s a collectable that’s both cute and rewarding, the best kind.
Go For the Platinum
Obviously, one of the best options after beating a game is trying to wrap up that trophy list and get the Platinum. By beating all the substories, playing through Clan Creator, and taking down Jo Amon, you’ll have wrapped up a fair amount of them anyway. By and large, the most time-consuming trophy will be raising all of Kiryu’s stats to 300, but there are a few involving mini-games that you might need to mop up as well.
Overall, Yakuza 6’s trophy list isn’t too ridiculous, and you can nab that Platinum with a decent amount of work. We’ve even got a handy guide walking you through how to get each and every one.
Jump Online With the Kiryu Clan
Clan Creator’s main focus is, of course, the story that has you taking down the street gang Justis. However, there’s an online component to the new mini-game as well, which lets you go up against other player’s teams, and create one of your own. The whole thing is pretty basic, letting your Strike Team go up against a gauntlet of three random players. At the same time, you create and upload your own Defense Force for other players to go up against. Both beating players and having your team defend against other players will give you points that raise your overall rank, allowing you to take on even tougher teams.
There’s plenty of time to spend making your way up the leaderboards with your clan and aiming for the top.
