How to Manage Your Camp in Red Dead Redemption 2
In Red Dead Redemption 2, players will take control of Arthur Morgan, a trusted member of the Dutch Van Der Linde Gang. Aside from just barreling your way through story missions, you’ll also need to take care of your fellow gang members, and that’s where camp management comes in. Here’s what you need to know about how to manage and take care of your camp in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Upgrading Your Camp in Red Dead Redemption 2
Once you get past the first chapter in Red Dead Redemption 2, the gang will set up camp at Horseshoe Overlook. This is when you can start donating money to the gang itself, and that money can go towards improving camp life.
First, look out for the icon that looks like a briefcase with a + symbol on it. This is the money box, and it can usually be found near Dutch’s tent. Head over there and interact with it, and you’ll be able to either donate cash or items. We recommend donating loot items, as these are much harder to sell for cash in general stores, and you’ll be freeing up inventory space by donating them to the gang anyway.
After you’ve got a good amount of money in the box in Red Dead Redemption 2, you can check the ledger right next to it to start getting some upgrades going. The first page will be dedicated to medicine and provisions, while the second page is dedicated to ammo and general improvements. Later on in the game, you’ll unlock more options on the third page of the ledger, allowing you to purchase a boat for the camp, along with a chicken coop and horse resting area.
When you’re getting started in Red Dead Redemption 2, we definitely recommend either upgrading Dutch’s lodgings immediately, or purchasing the leather working tools. Upgrading Dutch’s lodgings will open up further upgrade paths for Arthur’s tent and everyone else’s lodgings. In addition to that, getting the Dutch upgrade will encourage other gang members to donate more often, which should ease the financial burden on you.
The leather working tools are also a good first purchase, as this will open up personal upgrade opportunities with Pearson, the butcher. If you bring him enough perfect pelts and the relevant materials, Pearson can upgrade Arthur’s satchel and increase your inventory space.
Getting Supplies for the Camp in Red Dead Redemption 2
If you don’t consistently stock up on supplies for your camp in Red Dead Redemption 2, your gang members will start to get a little moody. There are three types of supplies: medicine, provisions, and food. Medicine and provisions can be obtained pretty easily. From the ledger, look at the bottom of the page for each respective section, and you’ll be able to pay a small fee to get someone to restock everything. As you continue to upgrade the types of supplies you can get for the camp, the restocking fee will increase as well.
As for food, the best way to keep everyone in camp fed is by going hunting or fishing. Once you’re equipped with a bow in Red Dead Redemption 2, you can get out there and start shooting some animals for their pelts and meat. Don’t cook all the meat for yourself, be sure to save some for the camp. The same goes with catching fish; once you’ve picked up enough raw meat, hand them over to Pearson so he can cook them for the gang.
Whenever you enter the campsite, you’ll see three small symbols at the top of your screen indicating the urgency level for your supplies. Yellow means you’ve got a surplus, white means your supply levels are acceptable, and red means you’re running low. Try not to let your supply levels go red, and keep an eye on it regularly.
Raising Gang Morale in Red Dead Redemption 2
If you want to keep your gang happy, you’ll need to do chores for them. Generally speaking, making sure that the camp is always well-stocked should keep most of the gang members happy. In addition to that, you can also do chores like chopping firewood or getting more water. The gang members will definitely notice, and your honor level will go up as well.
Every once in a while, a gang member will approach you and start a conversation. You’ll have the option to wave them off and say “Not now,” but it might be better to hear them out instead. Occasionally, you’ll also see some gang members sitting around with a white icon on the map indicating that they want to go hunting or fishing. Spending time with your gang members in Red Dead Redemption 2 is a good way to bond with them, and also a great opportunity for you to get more food for the the camp.
