In Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, you’ll be able to recruit up to an active party of five to join you in combat as you explore the Deadfire Archipelago in pursuit of the god Eothas. He’s up to, well… something after the events of the first game, and The Watcher is the one tasked with tracking Eothas down and figuring out what its intentions are.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire can be quite challenging, and it goes without saying that you’ll need to make heavy use of all the skills, abilities, and spells at your disposal to survive.

To manually use your spells and abilities (your character’s or your party members), click on the appropriate portrait (of the person you’re trying to control). From there you’ll see all of their assigned spells and/or abilities. Simply click on what you want to use and then who/what you want to cast or use it on. Casters will quickly rack up lots of spells, and for certain characters, you’ll need to first select a spell tier, and then select the spell you want to use.

If you so choose, you can micromanage all five party members in your party. Controlling when they use their abilities and spells. That’s a tall task for someone just starting out. It’s worth mentioning that you can assign any of your party members an AI script that programs them to behave in a certain way so you can focus on other things. To create and set an AI script for one of your characters, click on their portrait and then at the very far left of their ability bar you’ll see a head with gears. Left click to turn that on and off, and then right-click to see the details and adjust it if you want. They will have a default behavior based on their class, but you can tweak that to your liking if you so choose, such as encouraging party members to behave more aggressively or cautiously.

That does it for how to use abilities and spells in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, best of luck out in the Archipelago!
