How to Steal in Octopath Traveler
There are a total of eight primary classes you can experiment with in Octopath Traveler, and if you want a character that can steal items, you’re going to want to make use of the Thief class. With this, you’ll now be able to steal items from enemies and NPCs in Octopath Traveler. However, there are still a few limitations that you need to be aware of.
First off, you might have noticed a few locked purple chests as you’re traveling through the world of Orsterra. These can only be opened by Therion, who starts off with the Thief class by default in Octopath Traveler. When you have him in your party, you can open these chests with ease, and you’ll also gain access to the Steal Path Action, which lets you steal things from NPCs you meet along the way. All you have to do is go up to an NPC, press the Y button, and select the Steal option. You’ll see a list of the items they have on them, along with the percentages indicating your chances of successfully stealing that item. Do note that if you fail the skill check enough times, your reputation will go down in that particular town, and you’ll need to pay the tavern keeper to help restore it.
In battle, the Thief class can also steal items from enemies. Your chances of stealing from enemies increases when their shield is broken, when their HP is low, or when you use BP to boost your skill.
Now, you’ll unlock Thief as a secondary class later on in Octopath Traveler, which means that any of the other seven characters besides Therion can become a Thief. However, they will only be able to steal items in battle, and they will not be able to open the purple chests or loot items from NPCs. Those abilities are exclusive to Therion.
