How to Dive in MLB The Show 18

Most of the time in baseball and MLB The Show 18, offense gets all the attention. Routine fly balls don’t exactly get the adrenaline pumping as much as a home run or a perfectly hit line drive that splits the outfielders. However, the exception to that is when fielders can do something spectacular, like robbing a home run or diving for a ball. In this guide, as you can probably guess since you searched for it after all, we’re going to show you how to dive in MLB The Show 18. Luckily it’s very simple to execute. Not so lucky though: actually completing it successfully is very difficult.

There are two types of dives you can pull off. The first and much easier option, is a dive for a ground ball. For example, diving as the shortstop or third baseman to try and get out in front of a ball that is rolling towards the outfield. Once you think you have the timing right, simply press R2 and the left analog in the direction you want to dive towards and you’ll get your body and glove on the ground to try and snag the ball. Sometimes it’s just impossible to do, but most of the time, it doesn’t hurt to try since it was going to just leave the infield anyway.

The second, and much more difficult dive to do in MLB The Show 18 is the diving fly ball catch. To dive for a fly ball, you’ll need to be perfectly aligned with the fly ball indicator, be running towards the indicator and be about a human’s length away (since, you know, you’re throwing your body at it) press R2 just like you did before, and have the timing just right so by the time your glove arrives at the indicator, the ball is dropping down into your glove. Woo, nice one!

Let me reiterate, unless you’re very experienced (and probably didn’t even need this guide), getting the timing right for a diving catch is very difficult. We would not recommend beginners try this unless it’s for a foul ball where this no harm if you miss. Otherwise, what is most likely going to happen is that you’re going to completely miss, and if you’re in the outfield, the ball is probably going to roll all the way to the wall, and the base runner is going to have easy pickings for a triple or even an inside-the-park home run. You’re better off just eating the single/double, and getting out in front of the ball to recover it and throw it back in to the infield. You know, little league baseball 101 stuff right here.
