Headlander, PS4, review

The Methuselah titan is one of the very last things to stand in between you and taking down the evil AI of Headlander. The battle is broken up into three different sections much like the other boss battles earlier on in the game. Here’s what you’ll need to do in each of them in order to take the titan down and finish the fight.

The first part of your face-off with the toughest boss in Headlander is pretty straightforward. It has two moves at its disposal- the ability to knock objects down from the ceiling in the hope that they hit you on the way down, and a powerful laser beam that’ll cut your health down in no time. You can use the latter of these two moves against the titan with the help of your shield.

When you see it powering up and charging its laser, move yourself up towards its head and activate your shield. The Methuselah titan will fire the laser at you before it shooting straying off target toward the ceiling. Simply move up with the laser and make sure that your shield is constantly in between yourself and it. Aim it right, and you’ll bounce the laser back at the titan, cutting its health bar down pretty quickly. Do this twice and you should find the titan stunned. Head over to its glowing blue shoulder and headland onto it before pressing Square to overcharge it.

Phase Two

Once you’ve done this it’s time for the second part of the battle to start. This is where it gets a little trickier. The titan stops using its laser and instead opts for rocket-powered fists that, when they land can deal some serious damage. Include two of those pesky flying explosive drones and things can get a little hectic on-screen. The best way I found to take get through this part of the battle was to simply boost myself into the titan’s head. Ensure that both your health and stamina bars are full before launching yourself into it. Doing so will take a good chunk of health off of both yourself and the titan.

Now that you’ve landed your blow you’ll want to simply evade incoming hits and the little explosive drones flying around the level. When your health and stamina bars have repleted, rinse and repeat. With the floating drones often chasing you around if you come towards the top of the screen, we suggest staying low to the ground during your recovery periods, just be careful of the flying fists and that tail whip if the titan has its back to you. Three charges with your head should see you drop the titan’s health down by another third and open up another spot for you to headland on and overcharge.

Phase Three

In this final stage, you’ll have the added implications of pink Shepard security robots coming in to aid Methuselah’s titan. While this may seem like bad news at the beginning, these are also your most valuable asset during the last stage of this fight. Keep avoiding the incoming attacks from the titan until you see the Pink robots appear. Vacuum one of the heads off as soon as they appear and start pummeling shots into the titan’s now vulnerable chest section. If you’ve unlocked the upgrade, hold down R2 to charge your shots to whittle away its final third of health even faster.

Of course, you’ll need to keep an eye on your health in this section, so it’ll also help if you’ve picked up the upgrade that allows you to knock a robot’s head off and replace it with your own. This will allow you to quickly switch out of a badly-damaged body, as well as removing some of the Shepard support for the titan at the same time. Keep an eye on the number of Shephards spawning too, it’s easy to get overwhelmed during these last moments and have to start the whole thing over.

One Last Round

With a few solid blasts into the chest with your laser, the titan will be defeated… or so you may think. Just when you thought it was down it has to have one more round with you. Another third of its original bar spawns and it’s a head-off. During this stage, the best method we found was to repeat our charge method from the second phase. Unfortunately, this is a little harder as the titan head now follows you around pretty persistently, so you’ll need to boost a little every so often to give you a little space.

As soon as your bars are filled, charge into the head and continue to evade. You’ll also want to watch out for a laser move that sprays the whole room with pink darts of the harmful stuff. When you see the head stop, prepare your shield and wait the laser storm out. With a few bashes of your head, the titan will be gone for good this time.
