PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
One of the more similar games to Fortnite, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has players duking it out in a free-for-all fight. You’ll have to pick your drop point and scavenge the surrounding area for any weapons or materials you might find. At the core of it all, however, is to basically be the last man standing. PUBG features plenty of unique maps and different weapons to choose from, and there are even various vehicles you can use to get around the area. With its tight gunfights and vast maps, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is definitely worth looking into if you’re a major Fortnite fan.
PUBG might not have been the first battle royale game, but it definitely spurred other developers into trying their hand at the genre. The game became so popular that it was even nominated as Game of the Year 2017 back during its Early Access days. Nowadays, however, it’s facing against plenty of competition – particularly, Fortnite. These two titles have been duking it out since last year, with Bluehole having even considered taking legal action in the past.
H1Z1: King of the Kill & Auto Royale
H1Z1, like with Fortnite, started out as a completely different game. This zombie survival shooter took a different turn when the Fortnite craze swept in, and the developers added a new King of the Kill mode. The main difference with King of the Kill is that matches are much quicker and more chaotic. Unlike the typical 90+ players in a map, H1Z1 has up to 150 participants all scuffling to stay alive.
Just recently, the developers also launched a new mode called Auto Royale. This is a Mad Max style of the battle royale genre, where up to 30 teams of four players compete in a large map. One player from the team will be handling the vehicle while the rest of the team provide the firepower. It’s the driver’s job to grab any necessary power-ups along the road or crash into any crates filled with some useful gear.
Last Man Standing
The name really says it all. Last Man Standing is all about being the last player surviving the battle royale onslaught. Players will be taken to different maps where they’ll have to pick their drop point and collect any weapons or items nearby. Unlike Fortnite, there are no building mechanics in this game, so you’ll have to rely more on your surroundings to find cover. On top of that, the game also lacks any vehicles to get around the map. Nevertheless, there are still plenty of attachments and weapons you can pick up on the map. The game is actually free to download, making it a great entry for those who are looking are looking for an alternative to Fortnite.
The Culling
The Culling takes some inspiration from traditional battle royale elements, specifically from the Japanese show with the same name. 16 players will be placed in a jungle forest biome where they’ll have to fight to the death. Since you won’t be facing against waves of other players, matches go by much faster. On top of that, fights are much more personal, focusing on gory close-ranged combat. You won’t have to worry too much about that camping sniper sitting atop the tower you can’t possibly reach. There’s also a giant scoreboard in the sky that tallies your kills, giving off a Hunger Games-esque vibe throughout each match. While the player base might have dwindled, The Culling is still worth looking into if you’re a fan of Fortnite.
Rules of Survival
Ever since the battle royale craze boomed, developers have also been developing similar games for mobile devices. Rules of Survival was the first ever battle royale game for both Android and iOS devices until Fortnite and PUBG rolled over to the aforementioned platforms. Up to 120 players will have to compete in a nitty gritty deathmatch, complete with all sorts of weapons and vehicles. The map is great for those intense gunfights, and there is a good selection of weapons in the game. If you’re looking to try another battle royale game on your phone, Rules of Survival is fun and also free to play.
GTA Online: Motor Wars
Similar to H1Z1’s Auto Royale, GTA’s Motor Wars is just like Fortnite – but with more vehicles. You and your team will start the match by dropping off a Cargobob and scouring the area for any armed vehicles or weapons laying around. One player commands the vehicle while the others focus on gunning down any other players they see on the battlefield. The game mode features a handful of beautifully detailed maps, making for quite the road trip when you aren’t busy smashing someone else’s vehicle. The Motor Wars mode was included in the Smuggler’s Run update back in August, so it’s worth looking into if you have a copy of GTA online.
