Simply put, these two different ‘modes’ that Cloud has available to him in Final Fantasy VII Remake drastically changes how he handles in combat.

By default, Cloud will be in Operator mode in combat. He’s fairly quick and agile, enabling him to dodge out of the way of harm quickly and without any real issues.

To change into Punisher Cloud, you’ll first need to press the Triangle button when in combat. After doing this, Cloud will do a quick little animation before changing his combat stance entirely.

When in Punisher mode, Cloud is far more powerful. His attacks deal way more damage, and he’ll deal even more bonus damage after counterattacking a melee attack. You’ll also revert back to Operator Cloud after guarding a ranged attack or evading.

That being said, Punisher Cloud does have his downsides. In this mode, Cloud will be a lot slower both in terms of movements and swinging his iconic Buster Sword. It’s great for crowd control, or if you’re looking to deal maximum damage to an enemy in a short amount of time.

Which You Should Choose

The decision of which one of these ‘modes’ you choose for Cloud depends on the combat scenario you find yourself in. Sometimes sticking with Operator Cloud is best, particularly if you find yourself constantly guarding or dodging a barrage of attacks.

The extra speed and agility in movement — as well as your attacks — means you can dance around your opponent, deal some quick damage, and retreat to safety.

Punisher Cloud, from our time in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, is best used for when you’ve got a slower-moving enemy, a staggered target, or you need to do a quick bit of crowd control to give yourself some more room and time to breathe.

The added damage can wipe out hordes of weaker enemies in a single strike, and is useful for chipping away at the health bars of heftier enemies.

That’s everything you need to know to help you choose between Punisher Cloud vs Operator Cloud in Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Head over to our wiki, search for Twinfinite, or check out more of our coverage below for tips, tricks, insights, and more.
