How to Retreat in Darkest Dungeon

Recommended Videos

Darkest Dungeon is a hardcore, often brutal role-playing experience that will test your mettle at every stage. Whether you’re a veteran player or a complete novice, there will be encounters that you simply have to back away from. Particularly so, considering that permadeath will render any characters lost gone forever, and you’ll potentially lose a stack of money and trinkets if you’re entire party falters. How to retreat, therefore, is an absolutely essential function to understand. Here’s how it works:

There are two white flags you might have noticed when playing Darkest Dungeon. One is in the top left-hand corner of the screen, and one is in the top left-hand corner of the map (during combat). Selecting the white flag in the top left corner of the screen abandons the quest and exits the dungeon. The white flag in the top left corner of the map will trigger a retreat, which will cancel the current encounter and exit the room if successful.

Do keep in mind that the retreat function is not guaranteed to work. Additionally, even when it is successful it will stress your heroes. Use it only as a last resort.
