Best Starting Class in Dark Souls Remastered

Recommended Videos

If you’re new to the Souls series and are just getting started with Dark Souls Remastered, you might feel a little overwhelmed when it comes to selecting your starting class. Not to worry, however; we’re here to help.

The starting classes in Dark Souls Remastered are as follows:

  • Warrior
  • Knight
  • Wanderer
  • Thief
  • Bandit
  • Hunter
  • Sorcerer
  • Pyromancer
  • Cleric
  • Deprived

The great thing about Dark Souls is that every class is absolutely viable, and the stat differences aren’t too much of an issue because every character can be molded however you like. That said, if you are a new player, the starting class choice is pretty crucial because every class comes with a different set of equipment. The most popular choices for new players are usually the Warrior, Knight, and Bandit. All three classes come with shields that can block 100 percent physical damage, which is extremely useful when you’re just getting started and are relying on blocking attacks. The Bandit comes equipped with the Spider Shield, which can carry you through the first half of the game because of its added poison resistance. However, the Bandit also wields the Battle Axe, which may or may not to be your liking, depending on the kind of build you want to go for.

The Warrior and Knight offer a bit more of a traditional play style, as they both come equipped with the Longsword, which is probably the most straightforward weapon in the game. Between these two classes, however, we recommend going with the Warrior because the default equipment set for the Knight will cause you to fat roll until you can increase your endurance. The Warrior is a much better choice if you want to use the Longsword, and don’t want to deal with decreased i-frames due to the fat roll.

If you really want to go for a magic build during your first playthrough, consider choosing the Pyromancer instead of the Cleric or Sorcerer. You’ll still have a chance to level up your intelligence and faith stats later on if you want, but Pyromancy is one of the more unique forms of magic in the Souls games and it’s pretty fun to use. The Pyromancer also gets a Hand Axe as a starting weapon, so you always have a melee option.

As for the best starting gift to go with, it really doesn’t matter in the long run. The Master Key is generally not recommended for first-timers because it can lead you into high leveled areas you might not be ready for. At the same time, it’s also very useful for unlocking shortcuts early and finding your way around the game’s interconnected world. Without the Master Key, the game will funnel you through a much more straightforward and relatively smoother difficulty curve.

We recommend taking the Black Firebombs if you didn’t choose Pyromancer. These will make short work of the Asylum Demon. If not, the Humanity and Old Witch’s Ring are fine picks as well.
