How to Change the Difficulty in Crash 4

While there aren’t set difficulty settings in Crash 4, you can increase how challenging the overall experience is by applying challenges to each level or activating the Retro gameplay mode.

In regards to the former, you can set certain conditions and restrictions to each level after clearing it once. These range from implementing a time trial that requires you to beat the level as fast as possible to playing through a mirrored version of the stage via its N.Verted version. These can make clearing levels far more difficult, but will also net you rewards like gems or Trophies and Achievements.

You can decide when these challenges become active for each level too, allowing you to pick and choose which levels you want to be more difficult and which ones you simply want to complete to finish the game.

How to Activate Retro Mode

The latter method, meanwhile, serves as a more fixed way to increase the difficulty in Crash 4.

Harkening back to the original design of the series, Retro mode sees you limited to how many times you can attempt to clear a level by a set number of lives. Losing all of your lives means you’ll have to reload your game, and that you’ll have to start whatever level you were attempting from scratch.

This can make clearing the game far more challenging, and unlike the different challenges you can choose to undergo for each level, Retro mode stays active until you switch the game back to its standard Modern mode.

If this is how you’d like to play the game, then all you need to do is open up the main menu from the level map by pressing the Options button on PlayStation 4 or the Menu button on Xbox One. Then, scroll down to the Gameplay tab and select it. From there, you’ll be able to swap between Modern and Retro mode as you wish.
