According to the new issue, development on Uncharted 4 began after development on Uncharted 3 ended. After The Last of Us was completed, half of its development team moved over to Uncharted 4, while the remaining members of the team made its way over after finishing up with the Left Behind DLC.

Uncharted 4 will take placed three years after the events of Uncharted 3, where Nate is living happily with Elena before his brother Sam appears. Sam, whom Nate initially thought was dead, tells him that he needs his help in finding an artifact. The story of Uncharted 4 will take Nate and Sam to Libertalia, a “mythic Madagascar colony purportedly founded by pirates”. You won’t be spending the entire duration of the game on the island, however, as there will also be snowy and urban environments.

Two rival hunters, Rafe and Nadine, were also mentioned. While Nadine owns a private military company in South Africa, Rafe’s morals and approach towards treasure hunting is vastly different than that of Nate’s. It was also mentioned that the villains will play a much bigger role in the game this time around.

Below are additional details about Uncharted 4:

-Elena and Sully were teased to appear

-Sam is more reckless than Nate

-Collectibles may contain notes pointing to more treasures

-Enemies can grab your leg if you attempt to push them over ledges

-Tools may be incorporated into puzzles

-The focus of this game will be on navigational freedom

-There will be multiple paths and approaches in gameplay

-Plenty of side stories will be available to those looking for them

Uncharted’s trademark humor will still be around in the game

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is set to release on the PS4 some time this year. You can purchase the February 2015 issue of Game Informer here.
