The first annual Dead or Alive Festival gave fans plenty of free prizes, contests, and the chance to watch the world’s best Dead or Alive 5: Last Round players compete in an intense exhibition match. However, the most surprising news was confirmation for a sequel to a ten year old game.

Team Ninja’s head developer Yosuke Hayashi confirmed today that Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 is in development. Hayashi says the characters of Dead or Alive will be on vacation in a southern island in this game. He also affirmed that a Dead or Alive Xtreme sequel was the most frequent request he gets from fans.

Dead or Alive Xtreme is a relationship simulator and volleyball game first released in 2003 on Xbox. The most recent game was Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 in 2006.

Details for future Dead or Alive 5: Last Round DLC were also revealed. In spring 2016, the game will be updated with a new stage and character. Koei Tecmo also confirmed several costume collaborations that will be released as DLC later this year. In September, costumes based on Falcom games The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki and The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky will be released. In November, costumes based on Square Enix’s Schoolgirl Strikers will be released. Finally, costumes based on Tatsunoko Productions characters are coming in spring 2016.

It seems like Team Ninja’s often-mentioned “Soft Engine” technology will get more use in the future. Getting a sequel to a nearly decade-old game is unexpected, but it’s always encouraging to see developers respond directly to fan requests.
