October 2017 Games to Look Forward To
Kicking off October 2017 is one of Microsoft’s biggest franchises, and it’s heading to both the Xbox One and Windows 10. Forza Motorsport is one hell of a racing series, and over the years Turn 10 Studios has been refining their formula. As a result, the upcoming Forza 7 looks to be one of the best games they’ve ever put together.
If you’ve never played a Forza game, they’re solid racing experiences that lean more towards the arcade side of things which makes them very accessible. Don’t worry about them being overly easy, though, as you’ll still need to learn tracks, tune vehicles, and compete with some of the best out there. Also, thanks to Drivatars, you’ll also get the feel of playing with real players even if you’re not actually playing online. If you’re just really into cars and want a game that takes advantage of your Xbox One, look no further.
Middle-Earth: Shadow of War
(PS4, Xbox One, PC – Oct. 10)

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor was largely considered one of the very best games of 2014, and Monolith looks to be attempting to do it again. Shadow of War is the highly anticipated sequel to that critically-acclaimed release and appears to build on everything that made the first game great. Tight combat, beautiful locations, and deep lore are all front and center. However, what will most likely steal the show again is the Nemesis System.
The Nemesis System has been upgraded to allow more control over the Orcs you take control of. Not only can you send them to sabotage other enemies, but you can use some in battle alongside you, build a powerful army, and even defend and take over bases. There’s a lot more to do, and you still have all the Lord of the Rings essence serving as a wonderful backdrop. If you loved the first game, be sure to keep this one on your radar.
The Evil Within 2
(PS4, Xbox One, PC – Oct. 13)

The Evil Within was a pleasant surprise when it released back in 2014. It was a time when horror games were reduced to nothing more than jump scares and the need to collect items while leaving the player completely defenseless. Shinji Mikami (the man who brought us Resident Evil) and his studio Tango Gameworks felt like it was time to bring the genre back to its roots, and that’s exactly what they did. Limited resources, powerful enemies, a dark, unsettling backdrop, and enough mind games to make you really question yourself while playing.
The Evil Within 2 is dialing the mind games up to 11 making the upcoming events even crazier and much more sinister. For players who like to be terrified even when they have a fully operational shotgun in their hands, this is a must-play. Also, it releases on Friday the 13th which adds to all the spookiness. Oh, and when you do start playing, don’t trust everything you see.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole
(PS4, Xbox One, PC – Oct. 17)

When South Park: The Stick of Truth released, nobody was entirely sure what to expect. Sure, we all knew to expect something hilarious, but as an RPG, a genre that players expect contain plenty of depth and strategy, it was up in the air. Thankfully, Stick of Truth ended up being one of the best RPGs in recent years and now fans are chomping at the bit for another entry. Don’t worry, though, as you don’t have to wait much longer.
October will see the release of South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Many changes have been made, which is fitting of the series which is always switching things up as well. The age of knights and magic is over, and it’s now time for superheroes to roam the streets of South Park, including you, the new kid. Combat is more strategic, there’s a larger focus on exploration, and if you’re wondering whether or not you can expect the same humor the franchise is known for, don’t worry, it’s all there.
Gran Turismo Sport
(PS4 – Oct. 17)

While Forza Motorsport 7 is sticking to what it does best, Gran Turismo seems to be taking a bit of a detour from what fans probably expected, though it’s still sticking to the realism of a true racing sim. However, don’t worry if a racing sim is a bit too intimidating a genre for you, as there will be an arcade mode, too.
The main draw for GT Sport is the attention to realism. Graphically, it holds its own quite well, making full use of what the PS4 and PS4 Pro have to offer. But on the track is where the realism truly shines, with players needing to understand everything about their vehicles and the tracks to truly triumph over the competition. It’s a new series in the franchise, so nobody knows where things will go, and that’s pretty exciting. If you have a PS4 and are looking to get in on some racing action, mark Oct. 17 on your calendar and get ready to rev your engine.
Fire Emblem Warriors
(Switch, 3DS – Oct. 20)

The Warriors franchise is one of the most well-known, bringing hack n’ slash action to players for over two decades. In recent years, the franchise has teamed up with some other well-known names in entertainment such as animes like One Piece and even gaming classics like The Legend of Zelda. The franchise is set to team up with a Nintendo property once more in October, this time tackling the beloved Fire Emblem series.
Players will get to take control of many of their favorite characters from throughout the series as they partake in huge battles that see thousands of enemies fall at the hand of your weapon. The game will also mix staples of the classic Fire Emblem games such as bonds, the level up screen, and impressive abilities for each character. It’s a much different take on the Fire Emblem franchise, but one that Switch and 3DS owners are sure to love.
Destiny 2
(PC – Oct. 24)
October 2017 Games to Look Forward To
Destiny 2 released on consoles during September, but October sees PC players get in on the shared-world shooter. Create a powerful guardian choosing from either a Warlock, Titan, or Hunter. Earn new subclasses and customize them to your liking. Uncover powerful weapons and new abilities. And, most importantly, take the fight to Ghaul and the Red Legion in order to save not only your home, but the entire galaxy.
Of course, PC players aren’t just getting a simple port of the game. There are some PC features such as full 4K support, unlocked framerates, enough sliders to make your head spin and your beefy rig smile with joy, and plenty of other goodies. This is the first Destiny game on PC, so many are excited to see what Bungie does. With the rising popularity of the title, and the fact that events are starting to roll out, it looks like there’s a bright future ahead of this franchise.
Assassin’s Creed: Origins
(PS4, Xbox One, PC – Oct. 27)

After being an annualized series for years, Ubisoft finally decided to give Assassin’s Creed a much-needed break so that the developers could take the time to create something truly fresh. Now, after that hiatus, fans have Assassin’s Creed: Origins to look forward to as the series takes players back the furthest they’ve ever been, to the height of the Egyptian empire. Not only will players see Egypt in its golden glory, but they’ll also witness the birth of the brotherhood, seeing just what brought about this secret order.
On the gameplay side of things, Origins is truly embracing the action RPG influences that have been showing up in the more recent releases. Bayek, the new assassin, will be customizable with different armors, weapons, and abilities (which you choose from full skill trees as you level up). Enemies will offer more of a challenge, requiring that you have skill and power to triumph, no longer able to rely simply on a chain of instant kills. Also, more strategy has been added to combat while world exploration is greater than ever before with a massive, open Egypt to explore. It’s a good time to be an Assassin’s Creed fan.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
(PS4, Xbox One, PC – Oct. 27)

BJ Blazkowicz is back and ready to once again fight the Nazi Regime that has taken over the world. What does that entail exactly? Glad you asked. It means shooting lots of bullets from lots of guns, sometimes two guns at once (which you can now mix and match). What happens when you run out of bullets? Well, there’s always bombs, the environment, and your trusty hatchet if you like to get up close and personal. Wolfenstein’s gameplay is one huge, finely-tuned gunfight.
There’s much more than just aimless shooting, though. MachineGames is continuing where they left off with their first game and injecting more life into the world and BJ himself. They don’t want him to be a faceless juggernaut who just shoots things. They want him to be human, a man fighting for something bigger than himself. He just happens to do so by shooting things in spectacular ways. So, if you’re looking for a high-octane shooter with plenty of guns, human enemies, and even some robots, look out for The New Colossus at the end of the month.
Super Mario Odyssey
(Switch – Oct. 27)

Of course, we couldn’t have a list of games to look forward to in October and not have one of Nintendo’s biggest releases of the year. Super Mario Odyssey, the next in a line of stellar 3D Super Mario games. As is the case with all new games in the franchise, Nintendo has included an interesting new mechanic. In Super Mario Odyssey, you’ll be able to use the power of Cappy, your sentient hat.
With Cappy, Mario will be able to take over objects and enemies, controlling them to navigate the world, solve puzzles, and overcome challenges. With multiple worlds, each with their own aesthetic and puzzles (as well as full day/night cycles), you’re sure to get lost in yet another colorful Nintendo adventure. The Switch has been a gift that keeps on giving, and it’s ready to do so again this October.
