10. J.D. Morrison

J.D. Morrison is a relative newcomer to the video game series, although dedicated fans will definitely be familiar with him from the Devil May Cry anime. Morrison has long been one of Dante’s closest friends and confidants, even knowing the Devil Hunter when he went by the name of Tony Redgrave.

Over the years Morrison has constantly provided Dante with a string of fresh contracts and jobs, and it’s always implied that Dante owes the broker a huge amount of money.

Regardless of this fact, Morrison has complete confidence in Dante, and based on the events of Devil May Cry 5 it certainly seems like the character will continue to play a role in the series.

9. Lucia

Lucia is one of the series’ playable protagonists, however, she’s only appeared in one game, the not so well received Devil May Cry 2. After luring Dante to her island, Lucia and her mother, Matier, actually reveal they brought him there to help slay a demon named Argosax, who’s trying to take over the world.

There are some big revelations about Lucia’s existence in Devil May Cry 2, and how she was created, but even after those, the character stays strong and true to her goals. As a fighter, Lucia is much faster and more agile than Dante, darting around the battlefield at high speed.

After the events of Devil May Cry 2, Lucia continues working as a Devil Hunter in order to keep the world safe. Although she doesn’t physically appear again, she is referenced later on as still being active.

8. Arkham

Arkham is the main antagonist of Devil May Cry 3, and other than Vergil he’s easily the most memorable of the series. He also happens to be Lady’s father. Dante first encounters this antagonist in his terribly annoying Jester form, a boss you go up against multiple times throughout the game.

Arkham’s ultimate goal is to become a demon and gain ultimate power, and he’s willing to stop at nothing to do it. Arkham’s charisma and cunning let him manipulate anyone and everyone for his own purposes, even the likes of Dante and Vergil.

What also makes Arkham so fun is the intense duality between his human person, more serious and scheming, and his flamboyant Jester persona.

7. Nico

Nico is a brand new addition to the cast of the Devil May Cry series, and she fits right in with the rest of the sarcastic characters. Nico is the daughter of Agnus from DMC 4, and she’s a brilliant mechanic who creates Nero’s various Devil Breaker arms.

Just as sarcastic and cocksure as Nero, the two characters have a fantastic relationship that always manages to be hilarious, despite the fact that they fully trust and support each other. Nico acts rough and tough, using profanity after profanity, but despite her general recklessness, she genuinely cares about her friends.

Although she’s the newest of the DMC cast, Nico practically feels like she’s been there all along.

6. V

Yet another newcomer to the series, V joins as a brand new playable character in Devil May Cry 5. Although he’s physically too weak to fight himself, V uses three different demon familiars to do battle; the bird demon Griffon, panther demon Shadow, and hulking behemoth Nightmare.

V is an incredibly enigmatic character, and as a great fan of poetry, he often recites lines when talking to other characters or taunting bosses. Although V has a direct link to another character, he’s fairly unique in the overall scheme of the series, and his combat is hugely refreshing.

Although definitely more serious and emotional than Dante and Nero, V still has a dry wit that appears directly to the humor of the Devil May Cry series.

5. Trish

Aside from Dante, Trish is one of the only other characters that’s been in Devil May Cry since the very beginning. Originally a villain to Dante, Trish is a demon created in the exact image of Dante’s late mother, in order to lure in and deceive the Devil Hunter.

After the events of the first game, however, Trish becomes a steadfast ally and helper for Dante.

As it turns out too, the two characters are a perfect fit for each other. Trish is every bit as reckless and Dante, and she certainly loves a good fight. The good news, though, is that she has the skills to back it up.

4. Lady

The other femme fatale of the Devil May Cry agency, Lady was first introduced in Devil May Cry 3, and although her real name is Mary she prefers to go by the name Lady, which Dante gave to her.

Lady has an intense passion to hunt down and kill all demons, something that puts her into direct conflict with Dante early on, being part demon himself. Over time, however, Dante helps her learn that demons are very much like humans, with the capacity for good and evil.

Personality-wise Lady is aggressive, tough, and sarcastic. She has the skills and wit to match both Dante and Trish, despite the fact she’s only human, and she’s been a fan favorite character ever since she was first introduced.

3. Nero

Nero had a bit of a rough time when he was first introduced, having to be compared to the legendary character that is Dante. Over time, however, he’s really come into his own as a protagonist and become incredibly likable.

Nero was raised in Fortuna as a knight in the Order of the Sword, but he’s always had a rebellious streak that led to him doing things differently from everyone else.

He’s brash, headstrong, quick to anger, and incredibly passionate, with all of these serving as both strengths and weaknesses for Nero. In fact, Nero’s personality is basically the exact opposite of Dante’s, which is what makes it so fascinating when the two characters interact.

Nero’s always one to crack a joke and loves making fun of those he’s fighting, and he’s certainly not afraid to use crude language. His cockiness can sometimes get him in over his head, but luckily Nero’s got incredible power bubbling up from within that lets him take on nearly any challenge.

2. Vergil

Dante’s twin brother and one of the main antagonists of the Devil May Cry series, Vergil truly is the antithesis to everything that Dante represents. Whereas Dante embraces his human side and strives to protect the human world, Vergil craves power and seeks to fully become a demon.

Vergil is the exact opposite of Dante in every way, with a cold, calculating personality and a constant aura of fearlessness. He’s an incredibly skilled swordsman and probably has the most inherent combat skill out of anyone in the entire series.

The two brothers seem fated to constantly be in conflict, and despite the disdain they have for one another, there’s still some level of loving and caring that the two share. After all, the only two people in the entire world that can understand what the other has been through, is Dante and Vergil.

Vergil serves as the perfect antagonist throughout much of the series, and the games that don’t feature him definitely suffer for it.

1. Dante

How could this be anyone else? Dante the legendary Devil Hunter isn’t just the main protagonist of the franchise, he’s also become a gaming icon over the years, taking a seat alongside the likes of Link or Master Chief.

We’ve seen Dante undergo some fascinating character growth over the years, from his hot-headed younger version in Devil May Cry 3, to the calmer more confident version we play in Devil May Cry 5.

One thing is always present, however, and that’s Dante’s fantastic sense of humor. Similarly to characters like Deadpool or Spider-Man, Dante constantly makes light of the situations he’s in, taunting the grotesque demons he fights as every opportunity.

Despite being half demon, Dante has an uncanny sense for what’s right and wrong, and he’s constantly striving to defend the weak or bring justice where it’s needed. He has incredibly combat skills and can adapt to any situation, or use practically any weapon he gets his hands on.

Devil May Cry is Dante, you simply can’t have one without the other. Although others have tried, no other gaming protagonist can match the sarcastic style of the red-coated Devil Hunter.
