Mario Kart 8: Deluxe

After hearing the news that both, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, would be receiving updates, allowing the Nintendo Labo VR kit to be used for select special stages in Mario and for Zelda, the whole game will be playable using the cardboard VR goggles.

This got me to thinking: what other Switch games could benefit from a new VR mode? The first that comes to mind is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. There actually has already been a Mario Kart VR game, but imagine being able to race in first-person using the VR goggles.

Coming into contact with slippery banana peels and terrifying Blue Shells in VR sounds incredible and if an update were to be added to allow for it, it would give owners of the kart racing game a reason to pick up Nintendo Labo and to jump back into the game.

Tetris 99

With the popularity of Tetris lately thanks to the VR puzzler, Tetris Effect, that released late last year and the battle royale version of the famous tile-laying franchise, Tetris 99, the series is stronger than ever.

Tetris 99, being a free eShop game, brought tons of players onto the Switch, letting people compete with 99 other opponents to see who can last the longest in a single game of Tetris. It’s pretty barebones but it’s Tetris and Tetris can do no wrong.

Adding a VR update to this one, even if I had to pay, would be a brilliant idea, taking inspiration from the PS VR title, Tetris Effect. Give me amazing new music tracks to listen to and special VR effects, and Tetris 99 would be way more fun than it already is.

Imagine being able to move your head a little bit to take a look at the 98 other Tetris games going on at the same time, you can see what’s going on and truly feel like the matches are life and death.

Yoshi’s Crafted World

Yoshi’s Crafted World would play similarly to Astro Bot Rescue Mission as you follow a character who you can control, but with more platforming in mind. Since Yoshi’s Crafted World lets you play the front and back side of every level, the VR stages can be exclusive and provide a 360 view of the levels, letting you watch Yoshi from all sides.

You can take a deeper look at the wonderfully designed cardboard objects that Crafted World has to offer and trust us, there’s a lot to see here.

I took my time playing the base game simply because I loved admiring all of the hand-crafted items, enemies, and environments, so being able to get closer to everything would be just wonderful.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Captain Toad’s bite-sized diorama-type levels are perfect for experiencing in VR. Since Toad can’t jump, he must find his way across tiny stages by solving puzzles, defeating enemies, and activating switches and levers.

If you were having trouble in a level, you can move your head around to peek around the environment without having to use the sticks. You’ll have like a higher power that gives you an advantage over other players.

Using the VR goggles also might make you feel like you’re actually in Toad’s adorable little treasure-tracking world. You’ll really be able to look around and take all of the environments in.

Minecraft

Taking on hordes of zombies, skeletons, and whatever else may stand in your way would look amazing in VR. You can actually already play Minecraft in VR by using Oculus on PC, but being able to do this easily on the Switch with just some cardboard would be really cool and less costly to try out.

Even in third-person, VR would work well with Minecraft, as you could probably zoom out and look around the world while still controlling your character. Going deep into the dark caves for mining could prove to be quite scary; I can only imagine a spider being right on your face, or even worse, a freaking creeper.

You can gather up some friends who also own a Labo VR kit and have a blast in Minecraft together. It wouldn’t be the best way to experience VR, but if you have Minecraft already and looking to buy a VR kit, then a potential update could be interesting to see.
