deep rock galatic, FPS

Like a mix between Minecraft and Left for Dead, Deep Rock Galactic is a co-op FPS game where you and up to four friends dig and explore through cave systems filled with both precious resources and dangerous enemies.

There are four classes to choose from in order to be an asset to your team – a Scout who explores ahead and lights up any tunnels you make or encounter, a Gunner who specializes in combat, an Engineer who builds defensive items like turrets to keep the team safe, and finally a Driller who pushes through rock to make tunnels for the team to explore through.

With a main hub called the Space Rig, you can launch games, upgrade items, or change your character’s appearance. Missions are begun when teams are dropped from the Space Rig onto various different planets called Hoxxes that are divided into seven different types including Crystal Caves, Salt Pits, Fungus Bogs, and more. Missions can be anything from traveling to planets to collect resources, eliminate enemies, capture points, or simply mine and explore the world further.

Deep Rock Galactic is currently in early access starting on Feb. 28 on Xbox One and PC, but is set to release fully sometime in 2018.

Far Cry 5

Arguably the largest FPS title to release in Q1 2018, Far Cry 5 takes players to America for the first time in the series’ history, set in the fictional location of Hope County, Montana.

You are a rookie deputy sent there to place a cult’s prophet Joseph Seed, or The Father, under arrest when things go very wrong very quickly. You soon find yourself stuck in the County, having to fight The Father’s three siblings John, Faith, and Jacob to retake the land from the cultists and finally take on The Father yourself.

From bows and snipers, to flamethrowers and even a gun that vaporizes organic material on the spot, Fay Cry 5 has dozens of weapons to try whether you’re fighting a grizzly bear or sneaking through an outpost and stealthily taking out every enemy on the way. Missions range from helping out civilians with smaller tasks like catching the biggest fish you can find, to full on fire fights in enemy bunkers. If you are looking for a classic FPS experience, then Far Cry 5 is probably the choice for you.

Far Cry 5 released for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 27.

SUBNAUTICA

subnautica

After you crash onto an alien world with an ocean as far as the eye can see, you are tasked with exploring this world’s underwater ecosystem filled with resources, marine life, and dangerous predators. In the massive underwater world you’ll have to keep an eye on your oxygen levels as you delve deeper into coral reefs, sea trenches, open vasts of ocean, lava fields, and more.

After your crash, you’ll only have so much time to find resources in the ocean to make weapons, food, drinking water, and more to survive. To further protect yourself, you can build massive bases on the sea floor so you can check in to drop off resources, refill your oxygen, or even make and use vehicles to get around quicker.

All along a mystery will unfold as to what brought you to this planet in the first place, and exploring further will unlock clues as to what happened. Try not to stay out too long though, as like with most survival games the predators come out at night and unless you are well equipped they can kill you easily.

Subnautica released for PC and Xbox One on Jan. Jan. 23.

SEA OF THIEVES

Best FPS Games of Q1 2018

sea of thieves

A new swashbuckling title from Rare puts you in the shoes of a pirate exploring the seven seas in an open world multiplayer experience.

A lot of the gameplay is focused around exploration, but there’s some fun FPS gameplay stuffed in here as well. Gun weapons include pistols, shotguns called Blunderbuss, and snipers called Eye of Reach. Two weapons can be carried at once, and you can use canons on the side of your pirate ship to fight enemy pirates on the seas.

On the ship you can take over a few different roles, such as navigating, using the canons, hoisting the sails, steering, and more. You and your crew will have to work together to make sure your boat sails correctly so you can undergo missions to be the best pirate you can be.

Sea of Thieves released for Xbox One and PC on March 20.
