Far Cry 5

10 Best Far Cry 5 Easter Eggs We’ve Found So Far

Don’t Press X to Start the Game

The beginning of Far Cry 5 almost sounds like the setup to a joke: the player character, a U.S. Marshall, and the local sheriff walk into a villainous cult’s base of operations, approach the leader Seed, and the player presses X to arrest him. No, that last part is not a reference to the infamous “press X to pay respects” meme; players literally have to press a button to arrest Seed. Then, the player walks Seed to a helicopter, his most zealous followers sacrifice their lives to stop it, and everything comes crashing down.

But, what happens if players don’t press X? The same thing that happens if the player listens to Pagan Min at the beginning of Far Cry 4 and wait around for fifteen minutes: an alternate ending plays out and the game ends on a (kinda) positive note. You’ve got to love Easter Eggs that reward players for going against the grain and not pressing button prompts.

The Definition of Insanity

Best Easter Eggs in Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5 has plenty of collectibles, including bobbleheads. But, several bobbleheads aren’t just collectible; they’re also cute little unlockables players can display on a vehicle’s dashboard. The most notable bobblehead sports the head of Far Cry 3’s iconic antagonist, Vaas Montenegro. He’s the reason most Far Cry games star oddly charismatic and irredeemably insane villains, which makes his face is a welcome sight in any game. Plus, seeing his head on a hula girl body is the definition of hilarity.

However, if Vaas just doesn’t fit a player’s style, he or she can always give their dashboard a little extra “BWAAAH!” with a Raving Rabbids bobblehead. Or a Pagan Min bobblehead, albeit not on a hula girl body.

IT’s Around Here Somewhere

Best Easter Eggs in Far Cry 5

Discovered by Captain Eggcellent, Far Cry 5 hides an open sewer pipe to the east of a massive crop circle. A single red balloon, the calling card of the eldritch villain Pennywise the Clown, floats next to the pipe entrance. Players can stare at the balloon or shoot it, but sadly that’s the extent of the Easter Egg. At least, it is until players find another red balloon in a dilapidated building next to a bed surrounded by mannequins. And a sheet of paper on a chair that mentions “clown thoughts.”

Who knows how many of these balloons are hiding in Far Cry 5? Maybe they’re the reason why not a single child can be found in the game – they’ve all been kidnapped by Pennywise.

Loser Loser Frying Pan Snoozer

Best Easter Eggs in Far Cry 5

Reddit user john007007 discovered this Easter Egg quite by accident: a corpse holding a frying pan. While this could just be some random humor, it’s far more likely a reference to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ bulletproof cast-iron pans. While pans can’t actually block bullets in reality (or Far Cry 5), someone forgot to tell this poor guy, because he brought one to a gun fight. Maybe he would have had better luck with a knife. Sadly, we have no idea where this particular Easter Egg is located, so keep your eyes peeled.

A Little Bit of Self-Deprecating Humor

While not exactly hidden, this particular Easter Egg is dedicated to all the Far Cry fans out there who agree previous games involve too much tower climbing. Early in Far Cry 5, players are asked to climb a radio tower, which is bound to make plenty of gamers groan and roll their eyes. But, halfway up the tower, the player receives a radio transmission that states he or she won’t have to climb up radio towers in the future. And indeed, climbing towers, for the first time in a long time, isn’t an essential plot point of a Ubisoft game. Hallelujah.

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Is Canon

Best Easter Eggs in Far Cry 5

While Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a cheesy and glorious love letter to the ’80s and ’90s, its neon landscape and laser-shooting dinosaurs are at odds with the rest of the franchise’s realism. But, the game is technically canon, if you count being a movie within the Far Cry universe canon.

In Far Cry 5, the player can help film this cheese-fest. All players have to do is look for Guy Marvel (and put up with his arrogance), and they will be rewarded all the Blood Dragon references they could ever want.

We’ll be sure to keep this list updated with any more Easter Eggs we find, so sound off in the comment section if you’ve got one to share.

They’re Putting Chemicals In the Water That Turns the Freaking Frogs Gay!

Best Easter Eggs in Far Cry 5

Somewhere in a cabin in Far Cry 5, players will find a letter that comes across as the ramblings of a madman complaining that the fictional drug Bliss is turning the deer gay. And the dogs. And the cats. And the frogs. Turns out this insane rant isn’t a work of pure fiction but instead heavily based on the ravings of conservative conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. The man has made a name for himself making ludicrous statements, including claiming homosexuals are literal demons while also claiming they’re decent people in the same sentence, as well as stating meme-worthy phrases such as, “I don’t like them putting chemicals in the water that turns the freaking frogs gay!”

While the letter references these statements, you might wonder why such an Easter Egg would be in Far Cry 5. Well, Jones attacked Ubisoft for making the game’s main villains a militant cult of Christian extremists (he claims every movie, television, and game company is out to demonize conservative Christian Americans), so this turnabout isn’t completely unexpected.

Not the Reference He Was Expecting

Last year, PC Gamer journalist James Davenport wrote a letter to Ubisoft to ask the company to place his father in Far Cry 5. Of course, the letter was tongue-in-cheek, but Ubisoft took it seriously and put Davenport and his dad in the game. Sort of.

Davenport Farm is most likely a reference to the men, as is a note found on the farm that states, “Bovines are the most erotic animal on God’s green Earth” and that the person who wrote it likes to sneak into the farm and have sex with the cows. Methinks Davenport may have accidentally wished on a monkey’s paw.

Some People Just Love to Watch Fire

Best Easter Eggs in Far Cry 5

Fire towers are a common sight in mountainous areas; they are isolated structures essential for detecting forest fires early and aiding lost hikers. Lately, they’ve become a subject of interest for game developers, and one of the more notable indie games to feature fire towers and those who work in them is Firewatch. While I will not spoil this Easter Egg, I will say Far Cry 5 features a fire tower with an answering machine that holds a message for “Henry,” the name of the protagonist of Firewatch.

Odds are this is a callout to that particular game. This reference probably went over the heads of gamers who haven’t played the game, but at least now you know who Henry is. It’s a shame, though, that this is seemingly the extent of the reference, but a AAA game referencing an indie game is always a good thing.

The Most Famous of All Video Game References

Best Easter Eggs in Far Cry 5

Video games have come a long way, and many players likely remember the awkward years when game developers hadn’t quite gotten the hang of writing dialogue. Gaming history is filled with plenty of awkward nuggets, including “All your base are belong to us,” and, “You were almost a Jill sandwich,” but the arguable king of meme-worthy dialogue is The Legend of Zelda’s, “It’s dangerous to go alone!  Take this!”

This iconic phrase is plastered in the minds of players the world over, and also on post-it notes scattered throughout Far Cry 5. It’s solid advice since the game is full of roving bands of malicious militia. Plus, players can team up with a trained bear; who in their right mind would want to go alone?
