In a recent report from Capcom, the company president, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, spoke on how Capcom plans on utilizing some of their dormant properties. He didn’t mention specific franchises, but that hasn’t stopped us thinking about what games we would love to see make a comeback.
Here are five dormant Capcom franchises that should be revived.
Viewtiful Joe
Viewtiful Joe was an excellent and super-stylized 2D beat ’em up title that was developed by the team over at Clover.
That studio is now gone but some of the key members of the team went on to create PlatinumGames, another studio known for their top-notch combat in games such as Bayonetta and Astral Chain.
We haven’t seen a new Viewtiful Joe game in forever and there’s honestly no other franchise like it. You were able to pull off sick VFX powers that would allow Joe to slow down time, speed up time, and even replay and record attacks to do three hits in a row.
All of the bosses in the game were brimming with personality, provided an actual challenge, and required you to think outside of the box to take them down.
This series coming back might be hard since the original team at Clover is separated, but seeing a reboot from PlatinumGames would make fans scream and cheer with joy, including myself.
Maybe when Bayonetta 3 is finished, PlatinumGames can possibly give our boy Joe some much-needed love.
Mega Man Battle Network
Back in the 2000s, Capcom was busting out these Mega Man Battle Network games like nobody’s business. There were six Battle Network games and then the Star Force series had several entries as well, plus an anime series.
These games looked like your traditional top-down RPG, similar to games like Pokemon, but the combat was very unique, with a battlefield consisting of several spaces where you can freely move Mega Man around.
The system consisted of having a deck of battle cards to use during the fight, and depending on where you were standing, the cards would have different effects.
You would play as Lan, exploring the real world and taking on quests, and then the majority of the game would take place in the Net, where you would jack-in and then play as Mega Man.
Even though Capcom released almost a dozen iterations of the franchise, they didn’t review well, but I think that a reboot would be awesome, especially since Mega Man 11 performed pretty well, critically.
It would give fans a different take on Mega Man and could introduce new characters or maybe a different battle system.
I just want a new Mega Man RPG and since we probably won’t be getting a new Mega Man Legends game, this could be the next best thing.
Breath of Fire
OK, hear me out here. We did get a recent Breath of Fire game back in 2016 with Breath of Fire 6 but it was a Japan exclusive, free to play online game with microtransactions and that’s not what I consider to be a proper BoF game.
Now, what we need is something like BoF III, a massive turn-based RPG with interesting characters in a gorgeous fantasy world. The gameplay was immersive, the artwork and design of the cast was very impressive for its time, and there were dragons… come on.
Capcom is a company now that is not known for traditional turn-based JRPGs, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t go back to their roots.
Having a full-fledged reboot of Breath of Fire on modern consoles would be crazy if it actually happened but I would drop everything to play it and I think that old-school fans would do the same.
Considering how popular a game like Dragon Quest XI has shown to be in this day and age, I think that Breath of Fire could find its place today as well.
Oh, and did I mention that the music is fantastic! Take a listen at this jazzy battle theme below –it’s so good.
Dino Crisis
Dino Crisis is another old Capcom property but this one was created by Shinji Mikami, the director and producer of the first few Resident Evil games.
So, Dino Crisis was essentially Resident Evil if you replaced the zombies and dogs with dinosaurs… deadly and horrifying dinosaurs… and you would shoot them with an assortment of guns.
It stars a girl named Regina who finds herself trapped in some sort of research facility that is overrun with these carnivorous monsters and she tries to find her way out while loading bullets into T-Rex monsters.
Seeing a modern take on Dino Crisis would be interesting to say the least and there’s really no other game like it on the market right now, so I would think that it would gain at least a little bit of traction from series veterans and the sort.
Imagine the first game being built from the ground up as a remake similar to Resident Evil 2 earlier this year.
Seeing dinosaurs in that gorgeous RE engine would be pretty spectacular.
Darkstalkers
The last time we saw a new Darkstalkers game was back in 2013 when Capcom put out an HD collection of the series’ greatest hits in the form of Darkstalkers Resurrection, but it seems that a new game is not coming anytime soon.
Darkstalkers is essentially a gothic/vampire/monster-themed 2D fighting game, akin to Street Fighter, but with a way more animated/hand-drawn art style to it.
Although Capcom already has some pretty big fighting franchises up their sleeve, like Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom, I think seeing a new Darkstalkers game could be cool, even if it was just a lower-budget downloadable-only title.
It would appease fans and give the fighting game community another option besides the usual suspects, plus it would give Capcom another premier fighting franchise to hold them in place as the publisher who puts out fantastic brawlers.
