Dead or Alive 6

Dead or Alive 6

Dead or Alive has long been one of the best brawling franchises out there, and this year it’s taking steps to be more accessible than ever with Dead or Alive 6. A reworked fighting system introduces new elements like Fatal Rush that lets you use a special attack to charge through your opponent’s combo, or dramatic slow-mo attacks that make fights more cinematic.

While you can still use the complex combo system, a simplified mode is being introduced for beginners, letting players string together combos with the push of just one button.

Dead or Alive 6 features a brand new story for the franchise taking place after DOA 5, even introducing some new characters into the mix like the Mexican-American street fighter Diego, or scientist and martial artist NiCO.

By all regards, Dead or Alive 6 looks to be a bigger flashier entry than ever before, but one that sincerely wants to attract new players and focus on its fighting mechanics. It could even end up being the standout fighting game of 2019.

Devil May Cry 5

It’s been a long wait for a proper sequel in the Devil May Cry series with the last game, Devil May Cry 4, releasing all the way back in 2008. That wait has paid off, however, as Devil May Cry 5 takes place the furthest in the franchise timeline that we’ve seen, once again starring Nero and Dante, while introducing a brand new character named V.

Each of these three characters are playable, and they all sport a completely unique combat style and moveset. For example, Nero has the ability to use Devil Breakers, mechanical arms that have wildly different effects, while Dante can swap between multiple different weapons and combat styles.

Devil May Cry 5 is built on the gorgeous RE Engine used for Resident Evil VII and the Resident Evil 2 remake. The game makes full use of its graphical power, with gothic settings that fit perfectly into the series’s themes.

Stylish action has always been central to the franchise, and Devil May Cry 5 looks to have it in droves. Fans of character action games definitely need to look out for this one.

Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

Games as a service or “looter shooters,” if you will, have had a rough time of it lately. Between the problems Destiny 2 has seen since launch and the rocky start for Anthem, so the time seems ripe for another game to swoop in and take some attention. While The Division may not have blown people away in 2016, hopefully, Ubisoft has learned from their mistakes.

There are some big changes coming with The Division 2, ones that should hopefully give the game legs the first didn’t have. Chief among these are reworked servers and anti-cheating methods, something that Ubisoft will be actively working on over time.

The Dark Zone is also much more robust this time around, split into three different areas that cater to different playstyles. An Occupied Dark Zone is much more approachable to casual and new players, while the East and South zones cater to snipers and close-quarters combat respectively.

There’s also plenty of opportunity for single player experiences with the game’s story, on top of engaging with other players. It seems like Ubisoft is much more focused on providing a wealth of content and diverse experiences this time around, and the lessons they learned from the first Division might have been just what they needed to make a great game.

One Piece: World Seeker

February was a prime example, more than ever, of the problems that anime games have. Jump Force showed a fighter that did next to nothing interesting with the fantastic source material it drew from giving us yet another generic anime fighter, even if the combat itself was good. One Piece: World Seeker breaks the anime game mold completely, trying something fresh and new.

An ambitious open world RPG, World Seekers tells an original story in the series that has Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew traveling to Jail Island. As you explore the island you’ll need to use a mix of Luffy’s Gum-Gum abilities and stealth to take down enemies and complete objectives.

Using Gum-Gum Rocket and other techniques you’ll be able to jet around the island at high speed, and you’re able to freely explore as you see fit. A gorgeous cel-shaded aesthetic also really helps nail the anime style, and Bandai Namco has clearly gotten One Piece’s art style down pat.

One Piece: World Seeker looks ridiculously ambitious, especially for an anime game, and looks to draw ideas from some great sources, like Batman: Arkham City and Assassin’s Creed. A full-fledged open world title isn’t really something we’ve seen from anime games, and if it’s done correctly, World Seeker could set a new precedent.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

FromSoftware has left an enormous mark on gaming in the past decade, creating an entirely new sub-genre known as Souls-like with the Dark Souls series. They’ve quickly become one of the premier developers, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice marks and evolution for the developer.

Although done in the same third-person action style, Sekiro is a far cry from Dark Souls. The game is much more action-oriented, with a combat system that puts a heavy emphasis on parrying and attacking an enemy’s poise and balance.

Taking place in 16th century Sengoku Japan, you follow a shinobi who was left for dead after his lord was kidnapped, and had his arm cut off and replaced by a prosthetic. This prosthetic gives you access to a ton of different tools, like equipping an axe on it, or shuriken.

You’ll also have access to a grappling hook, which makes Sekiro’s gameplay much more vertical than anything we’ve seen from the Souls series. With more stealth elements, no multiplayer, and a more concise story, there’s a handful of other reasons Sekiro isn’t just Souls in Japan.

Still, Sekiro looks to retain the trademark difficulty and complexity of FromSoftware, and could very easily end up being one of the standout action titles of the year.
