While superhero films have seen incredible commercial success, they have never received much love from entertainment’s biggest awards show, The Oscars. That changed yesterday when Marvel’s Black Panther became the first superhero movie nominated for Best Picture.
When Black Panther came out last February, it shocked the world, proving to be one of Marvel’s biggest critical and commercial successes. When all was said and done, the film had made $1.3 billion and is currently the third-highest grossing film of all time domestically.
This also means that Black Panther is the third-highest grossing Best Picture nominee for the Oscars, only beaten by Avatar and Titanic.
Black Panther’s nomination could mark a turning point in what has been a somewhat controversial relationship between superhero movies and the Academy Awards.
In previous years, movies like Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight or James Mangold’s Logan were thought by many to be deserving of a Best Picture nod but received none. Black Panther could mark the beginning of these movies consideration for high awards.
Black Panther was also nominated for Costume Design, Original Score, Original Song, Production Design, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing. Other Best Picture nominees are BlacKkKlansman, A Star Is Born, Green Book, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Roma and Vice.
You can find the full list of nominees for other categories on the Oscar’s website here.
