The teen horror film Truth or Dare opened over the weekend to underwhelming reviews, which is surprising for Blumhouse Productions, given the positive reception to some of its more recent horror/thrillers like Happy Death Day and Get Out.
Truth or Dare follows a group of college friends who find themselves playing the classic ‘truth or dare’ party game in an abandoned castle. What begins as innocent fun quickly turns deadly. If you enjoyed the film (or even if you didn’t), here are seven other movies to watch if you’re looking for something similar.
Ouija (2014)
Movies Like Truth or Dare
In the same vein of turning parlor games into horror movies, Ouija will be enjoyable if you liked Truth or Dare. The movie follows a group of teenage friends, as a ouija board wreaks havoc on their lives. Though the film is extremely predictable and its storyline is basic, there are still a few good jump scares to be found, which will fill your Truth or Dare void. Ouija also builds some great tension in the right moments, and works for a night in.

Cry Wolf (2005)
Movies Like Truth or Dare
Cry Wolf is one seriously underrated movie, and a classic take on the fable, The Boy Who Cried Wolf. The movie follows a group of English boarding school students, who get their kicks from telling lies. Everything is harmless fun and games, until a woman is murdered on their campus, and they are terrorized by a serial killer. The students’ lives are quickly threatened, as the lies and the body count rise. Seeking outside help is useless, though, because no one believes a liar.
Cry Wolf may just surprise you, as it’s one of the few slasher teen movies with a strong plot at its foundation.
The Game (1997)
Movies Like Truth or Dare
This David Fincher film starring Michael Douglas needs just as much praise and recognition as Se7en, Fight Club, and Gone Girl. Douglas plays the wealthy investor, Nicholas Van Orton, who becomes a loner after a falling out with his wife and younger brother, Conrad (Sean Penn).
For his birthday, Conrad gives Nicholas a coupon for something only known as the “game”, which will supposedly change Nicholas’s life. This classic thriller really shouldn’t be missed! It’s dark and full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end.
Sorority Row (2009)
Movies Like Truth or Dare
After a prank goes terribly wrong, a few sorority girls attempt to cover up the death of their sorority sister, rather than risk their futures. Nearly a year passes since the accident, until several creepy videos remind the girls of what happened that night and threaten to expose them.
Will Sorority Row change your life? No. But it’s a surprisingly fun slasher movie that is hugely entertaining. Call it a guilty pleasure and thank me later.
Happy Death Day (2017)
Movies Like Truth or Dare
Happy Death Day is a Blumhouse Productions movie done well. It begins when Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) wakes up on her birthday, or “death day”, and is killed later that evening. Stuck in a time loop, Tree must relive the same day repeatedly, being murdered in several different ways, until she finds the identity of her killer.
The great thing about Happy Death Day is the movie knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to embellish the plot, or leave you hanging at the end. It’s well-worth ninety minutes of your life, and you may enjoy it more than you expect.
Nerve (2016)
Movies Like Truth or Dare
Keeping with the theme of “teenagers doing things they shouldn’t be doing”, Nerve follows a high school senior, Vee (Emma Roberts), who gets wrapped up in an online game of truth or dare, called Nerve. ‘
In this game, there are “watchers” and “players”, the latter of whom have to perform increasingly dangerous tasks and stunts in order to receive money and popularity. As Vee progresses in Nerve as a “player” and the stakes grow higher, she finds the game is a lot more risky than she realized.
The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)
Movies Like Truth or Dare
The Strangers: Prey at Night is the sequel to The Strangers we had to wait over a decade for. In this second movie, a family finds themselves in a remote trailer park in an intense fight for survival. While this wasn’t nearly as scary as the first movie, the entertainment value is still there. It’s a good one to watch if you enjoyed Truth or Dare but are also looking for something with a little more substance.
